Madiba Day: A tribute to Nelson Mandel
February 11th is one of the most important days in the history of mankind. It was on this day 34 years ago that South African political activist Nelson Mandela was freed from prison after 27 years of being locked up for his effort in fighting against the oppressive institution of Apartheid in South Africa. This day would mark a new beginning not only for Nelson Mandela, but for the rest of the world as a whole.

Bob Marley: The Hero I Didn’t Know I Had
So it’s 1996 and a three year old me has been awakened in the middle of the night by my own screams because I just had a nightmare. My mother comes to get me out of my bed and carries me downstairs to sit on the couch while she either cleans up or is putting up the Christmas tree for the holidays. She also has the stereo playing loud to where you could hear it throughout the entire house. With so much music that she loved, the first choice of what she was listening to was definitely Bob Marley, her hero who inadvertently became one of my heroes.

Black Future
Hi Elijah King is a 1o year old boy getting off the bus from elementary school. As he walks into his house he has a big smile on his face because of what he learned today in class at school. “I can’t wait to write this letter” he thought. “I’m gonna save it and give it to my kids one day in the future.” Elijah sits down at the desk in his bedroom and pulls out his notepad. “Here goes nothing.” He starts as he begins to write.

People Who Inspired Me to be a Writer: Spike Lee
Have you ever watched a movie that was more than a movie? I mean, like it had a real life effect on you in a way that impacted your real world experiences? Well that’s what I recieved from all of Spike Lee’s movies. He is one of my all time favorite filmmakers and he is an incredible storyteller who inspired me as a writer.

Queen Bess
When I was in elementary school I read this story about a young Black woman in the early 1900’s who was said to be the first Black American female pilot ever. This was very interesting to me because as much as I was taught the importance of Black history in my house, added to how much my family loved to fly, I had never been taught the history of Black pilots in America, let alone Black female pilots at that. That young Black female pilot who’s history I came to know was Bessie Colman.

My Skin is Sin . Content Warning.
Six year old Kenya is getting off the school bus with her head held down and a frown on her face. “Hi baby.” Says her mother Carla as she walks past her without acknowledgement. “What’s the matter?” Carla asked. Kenya stormed upstairs without answering her and went straight to the bathroom next to her bedroom. Kenya closed the bathroom door and stared into the mirror above the sink with tears in her eyes. All she could feel was despair as she stared at her reflection.

Dear Trayvon . Top Story - February 2024.
Dear Trayvon, My name is Joe Patterson. We don’t know each other, but we have a lot in common. We are both young Black males, we have both faced ignorance and discrimination because of our skin color and we share a birthday, February 5th. I just wanted to write you a letter to let you know how life has been going since you’ve been gone.

People Who Inspired Me to be a Writer: N.W.A
”You are now about to witness the strength of street knowledge…” Those are the words of Dr. Dre as the opening lines of Hip Hop ensemble NWA’s debut song “Straight Outta Compton”. When ranking all of my favorite Hip Hop groups, NWA is definitely my number one. No group has inspired me more than NWA. They literally taught me the blueprint for how to make great, everlasting Hip Hop and they are also one of my biggest inspirations for becoming a writer.

Cookie & Papa: Cancer Survivors
February 4th is World Cancer Day. It’s a time when cancer awareness is front and center. If there is anything that resonates with me most about this day it’s the fact that both of my grandparents, Erma Gwendolyn Spencer and Harry James Spencer are the two mightiest warriors to fight cancer that I have ever known.
