A Criminally Fishy Date
“I want to take you to my favorite restaurant,” said Toby. I practically whooped for joy. Finally, some initiative! We’d been to my four favorite restaurants in an invariable cycle for two months. They were my favorites—a vegetarian, a southern comfort kitchen, the all-potato place, and a pork barbecue joint—so it wasn’t like I was having a bad time. But it seemed like Toby should share a little bit of his life with me sometime. If he wanted a relationship, that is. Why is it so hard to tell?

Happy Birthday
Lila cracked the eggs into the metal bowl. They made a divot in the mound of flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, sugar, and a dash of salt. The sensation of mixing wet ingredients into dry ones to slowly obtain a runny cream with a rich brown color was probably going to be the most pleasant experience of the day.

The musician materialized one morning in late July while I watered the garden. Through the spray mist and its fleeting rainbows, his dark form appeared like a statue. His hair was plaited to his shoulders, his smile inviting, and his brown eyes so lively, I kinked the hose, afraid I was getting his guitar wet.
