Dolphin Research Center Celebrates “Harry Potter”
It has been over two decades since the Harry Potter series was first introduced to the world through the first of seven books. From there, this internationally renowned book series would give way to a franchise that saw eight films, several spin-offs, live stage productions, creative cosplays, and an endless series of fanfictions across the internet. It has even given wave to several theme park attractions at Universal Studios parks in both Japan and North America.

Alaska SeaLife Center On the Brink of Closing Down
On July 13th, 2020, Tara Riemer, CEO of The Alaska SeaLife Center (ASLC) in Seward, Alaska, announced that the facility was facing the possibility of closing its doors for good, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was all based on the facility’s projections following a loss of revenue that is needed to provide animal care for both the animal residents and the marine mammals that are currently being rehabilitated.

New Research Questions Animal Rights Claims
Last year, the Journal of Veterinary Behavior published a paper by well-known animal rights proponents led by Dr. Lori Marino. The 2019 paper made dubious claims about whale neuroscience, behavior, captive stress, and whale care/longevity. Furthermore, the paper passed into anthropomorphism calling whale calves “children”, a term not usually associated with objective, non-agenda driven science. Marino is one of the names behind the controversial Whale Sanctuary Project and used her article to claim that orcas living under human care suffer from chronic stress as a result of living in man-made animal habitats. Unfortunately, very little work has been done in this arena to make proper comparisons.

Big Cat Expert Felicia Frisca Responds to New “Tiger King” Controversy.
The Greater Wynnewood Zoo, a road-side big cat facility that was the focus of Netflix’s The Tiger King series, has recently been under investigation by the state of Oklahoma for alleged animal abuse after a series of photos and videos that document the claims were leaked to the public. The evidence to support these claims include photos of lions suffering from skin conditions caused by insects biting their skin off and laying eggs on them. The zoo was once owned by Joe Maldonado-Passage, who is better known to the world as “Joe Exotic” before all ownership of the facility was turned over to Jeff Lowe and his partner, Lauren.

Why Artificial Animals Can Never Replace In-Person Encounters
Melanie Langlotz, a New Zealand-based tech entrepreneur and vegan helped her Chinese business partner build a lifelike, but creepy looking robotic bottlenose dolphin puppet after they were asked to build a suitable habitat for an aquarium that would house live cetaceans. The puppet, which has a 10-hour battery life and can last in saltwater for a decade, attracted the attention of theme park operators about possible mass production of the puppets after hearing a word about it from volunteers who swam with it. They claim that they were unaware that they were swimming with the puppet, which is a prototype by the way, until they were told the truth.

When Vancouver Aquarium Struggles, PETA Exploits
Six weeks in its closure, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Vancouver Aquarium is financially struggling to care for its sea otters, seals, sea lions, and other animals that call the 64-year-old facility home. The closure did not just mean a loss of revenue of about $3 million a month but also, a loss of about 2,00 visitors who patronize the aquarium each day through animal encounters, admission, behind-the-scene tours, and symbolic animal adoptions.

PETA Breaks The Internet?
While the COVID-19 Pandemic has forced many zoos and aquariums to stay closed to the public until it is contained, many animal care professionals continue to care for the animals that call these facilities “home”. They often update people on how the animals are doing, share some facts about their natural history, and even demonstrating how they care for them through husbandry and training sessions. While many are praising these people as “heroes” to both people and animals alike, there are some who don’t see it like that at all.

It also exploited the questionable animal welfare and business practices of the Tampa Bay-based Big Cat Rescue (BRC), which is a poorly-managed zoo that animal rights extremists have greenwashed as Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries-accredited sanctuary (Kroiss 2020).

With the COVID-19 pandemic forcing both families and communities alike from around the world to stay home, and cancel all major plans until it is okay to resume normal life, it is no arguing that it has allowed people to do all sorts of activities at home with their loved ones like playing video games, watching movies, baking, cooking, doing some arts and crafts, and of course, binge whatever show is on either Netflix or Disney+ which brings me to my next subject, a little docuseries on Netflix called The Tiger King.
