The Duck
There was only one rule. Don’t open the door. There used to be more. But things got simpler after dad died. Peter was playing underneath the kitchen table when mom told him. Her bare feet appeared beneath the edge of the table cloth. Strange. Normally she wore red tennis shoes. Peter crawled out. Her skin was pale and drooped beneath her eyes like heavy sandbags. Then she told him dad died. And then the rule: Don’t open the door.

Mao Song was born on February 7th, 1932. It was the year of the monkey, but he weighed 5.4 kg and was the largest baby Nantong province had ever seen, so his brothers said it was the year of the whale. They called him Jing, a word for whale. Everyone called him Jing in the fishing town where he lived.

"I Kind of Love Being a Dragon"
There are certain things, as a dragon, that can be a bit of a nuisance. Most of you humans assume it must all be glorious: gliding through clouds, breathing literal balls of fire, fearing absolutely nothing. But I challenge you, you little two-legged smooth skinned sack of mush, to imagine a life where you've sprouted wings the size of trees, where your skin has crisped into an armor of itchy, jagged scales, and where with every sneeze you wonder if whatever's in front of you will be incinerated in a blazing ball of fire and mucous. You see, it's not as glorious as you might think.

Killing Lester
Once upon a time, I killed a fella named Lester George. I killed him more than a dozen times before he got the point. Lester was about as dumb as the dumbest thing you can think of. For me, he was as dumb as a book with no pictures. He was the kind of guy everyone ‘round town knew about, in one way or another. He had a reputation for getting you in trouble, which was fine by me when I was a youngster. I was looking for trouble, so when I found Lester we stuck together like a honeycomb in a tar pit, and he was the tar.
