Pros & Cons of Period Products
Welcome to 2022, another year of Period Power (or at least if I have anything to say about it)! If you’re new here, my name is Emily and I’m the Period Power Dietitian behind Say Yes to Nourish, where my passion is the intersection between nutrition and menstrual health. We talk periods on the regular, and I invite you to stick around even if you don’t have periods or think periods are gross – someone you know and love has a period (and periods are a normal human body function)!

Happy Hormones Over the Holidays
The next two weeks will be full of stressors – both positive and not (I mean, timing when the turkey goes in is a MINEFIELD). Our hormones are bound to go through some ups and downs, but the beautiful part is that we can still care for them while we’re enjoying time with family, friends and delicious foods. From a Period Power Dietitian, here are my favourite ways to keep your hormones happy all holiday season long!

Nutrients Impacted by Birth Control
There are many different reasons that people use birth control – pregnancy prevention, PMS management, acne control, treatment for medical conditions such as endometriosis and more. Nutrients for Your Period
The menstrual cycle is an incredible process – some humans can make other humans, how wild! We can quite easily understand how much work and effort (and community resources, but that’s a conversation for another time) is needed to build a human body from a clump of cells, but I would almost bank on many people not knowing how much energy and nutrients are required for a simple period!

Easy Ways to Hack Your Hormones
I don’t know about you, but I am so tired of hearing about these strange diets designed to “balance your hormones” or “hack your metabolism”, taught by culturally acceptable (thin and/or muscular, likely cisgender) whyte men. My hormones, my body, my business – not to mention, if you don’t have a uterus, how could you possibly know what’s happening in there?

What is RED-S?
As a Registered Dietitian working primarily with women and women’s health concerns, I see a great deal of active individuals! Working with active women, it’s important to be aware of health concerns that can impact their athletic performance, along with their overall health. When we consider the culture that women (and all other folks!) live in – the expectation to be small, toned but not muscular, strong but not strong-willed, and quiet about their accomplishments – it’s not hard to imagine that they are missed… some providers aren’t even thinking about them!
