Nature's Sunshine
The lessons from the Great Depression left an indelible mark on Nana. She was a hoarder of sorts, well before it became fashionable to shame hoarders on the public airwaves. Which wasn’t to say that she didn’t keep a tidy home. It was meticulous. Pristine even. At any given moment she was ready to host or entertain if unannounced company stopped by. She simply refused to throw away anything that could be “repurposed.”

No Day at the Beach
Sharks. A simple answer that spoke volumes. When asked why he didn’t go to the beach, Brody answered, “Sharks.” He watched “Jaws” at an impressionable age. That did it. He could barely swim. He looked like a spider in a blender; arms and legs frantically flailing. It didn’t matter. He wouldn’t go into the water.

Watching Paul Newman Try on a Brown Suede Jacket
Winchell’s was the upscale clothing retailer in town. Upscale being an understatement. Selvage denim jeans lounged in splendor with come-hither tags boasting a thousand dollars or more. Cashmere sweaters from the wool of microbrew-drinking llamas produced a texture softer than a baby’s breath. Made-to-measure suits of imported silk from Saville Row cost more than my first car.

Death By Chocolate
Death By Chocolate Bennigan’s arrived in Jake’s hometown with tremendous fanfare during his senior year in high school. For a lower-middle-class family like his, it was a place of wonder. His family rarely went out for dinner; if they did, it was to Roy Roger’s for burgers. (His father was a huge fan of the “Fixin’s Bar” and its endless supply of tomatoes and onions.) On special occasions, they went to Tahiti East, an elaborately cheesy Chinese restaurant that was decorated to make you feel as if you had been transported to a Tahitian Island, vis-a-vis Morris County, New Jersey.

The origin of the Spring Rite of Dropping was unknown. Young Cassandra Ashley listened intently as grandparents spoke with hushed reverence about the tradition which stemmed back to their grandparent’s time, and grandparents before them. What little history that had been recorded, detailed the shire’s fortunes in times of the Rite.
