Pandemic
One of the striking events at the beginning of the pandemic was walking into Sainsbury’s, helping my mom, an NHS nurse, with the weekly shop - something I’d soon realise I’d taken for granted. A week before ‘Lockdown’, it was becoming apparent that the situation was dire, particularly as we circumnavigated an aisle, shoes squeaking, and stopped in surprise. Seemed people had got there long before us and drained the supplies of toilet roll, disinfectant, Marigold gloves: not rumours. Mom regarded me nervously, saying, “This is ridiculous. What’s with these people?”.

For Dad and my city at Christmas, Birmingham
Dad used to park the car near Broad Street; it was always difficult to find a spot. I recall my eagerness to clamber from the car and reach the market as soon as possible when I saw the fairy lights scattered along the skeletal branches of the trees lining the crowded pavements, people walking by the brightly lit pubs, steam filling the space in front of their faces as warm breath met icy air. The clubs and bars were thriving, shops packed, smiles everywhere. The city was alive, and it was beautiful.

New York Baby
Going round the Wrekin with Jackie. She always thinks she knows where she’s going, like she believes she has a sixth sense or something. She doesn’t half get on my nerves. Gotta remember she’s my sister I spose. Walking from Macy’s, making our way to Central Park. Trying to anyway. Jack calls me a buzzkill coz she says “It’s part of the experience! Have some fun why don’t yuh?”; I think you’ll find love, I really am trying. Maps exist don’t you know?
