When I first started writing, I was naive enough to fancy I could one day make a living from it. In reality, very few writers do. All most of us can hope for is to be read at all. So we post on platforms like Medium and Substack and Vocal and are happy when a post gets read by a handful of people. Most of mine get zero views. After a while, that does not matter either.

Size matters
When I go out for a beer, I am looking for a pint, that is, sixteen ounces. So, when a taproom replaces its glassware with an obvious smaller serving unit, it is annoying. It is not just about the shrinkflation that goes with charging the same price for a smaller measure — it is the smaller measure itself.

On our best behavior
When I heard that the Pacific Northwest Ballet was to do a performance of Sleeping Beauty, with the idea of introducing young children to the experience of going to the ballet, I was surprised to be triggered — even though I do not remember that experience ever being visited on me as a child. Just the thought of it was my idea of hell.

Bird Talk: Going nowhere
A bald eagle was perched in the top of a tree. For the last thirty minutes, no less than seven young crows had been attempting to get the eagle to vacate the spot, swooping in and around and dive bombing the target. But the eagle was not to be persuaded. Then they perched just below him and cawed at the top of their voices. Then another round of swooping and dive bombing.

Bird Talk: Greedy squirrels
From the roof of a garden shed, two crows were enjoying watching three squirrels raiding two bird feeders in the same yard. The fact that there were three squirrels and only two feeders made it all the more entertaining because aerobatic and gymnastic displays were interspersed with furious fighting and chattering.

Bird Talk
The morning was calm and the water was like a mill pond. A short distance from the shore, a large flock of assorted waterfowl sat happily on the water: buffleheads, harlequin ducks, goldeneyes and a random surf scoter. Then, one by one, heads plunged under and feathery butts popped up briefly before submerging. About a half minute later, one by one, they bobbed up above the surface. And so it went on. Most relaxing to watch. Does wonders for blood pressure,
