Strong winds were blowing towards the shoreline and seagulls were having a hard time landing on the beach. The wind just kept pushing them back and upwards. A seagull and a crow watched from the roof of the Bathhouse.

“That’s why my clan gave up on fishing in favor of scavenging,” said the seagull. “On a windy day like today, there’s spilled garbage everywhere to pick over.”

“But it’s not always this windy,” pointed out the crow. “Why would you stop fishing on other days too?”

The seagull looked annoyed.

“There’s always garbage to pick over,” he said.

“What I don’t understand,” said the crow, after watching several unsuccessful attempts to land on the beach, “is why they don’t just land a short distance in from the beach where the wind is lighter — and then walk the rest of the way with their wings tucked in tight.”

The seagull felt a bit slighted by the remark about his own species. What made it worse was the smug look on the crow’s face. He had to think of a comeback.

“It’s harder walking with webbed feet,” the seagull said, with a defiant look.

“Well I guess he told me,” thought the crow.
