My name is Colleen, I am attending graduate school to be an art therapist. In my free time I like to paint, draw, read, and write stories. I enjoy playing with traditional story structure and organization.

The Ship of Dreams and Screams
April 12, 2022 The fire used to burn brightly during the dark nights when my grandma would sit me down on her knee and tell me stories. It would crackle and pop during all her silent moments, and the hairs on my arms would stand on end. Sometimes near the end of her stories, her voice would get quiet, a shadow would appear in the window, and then a cold breeze would flow through the room. Even the hairs on the back of my neck rose; I would get goose bumps and chills as sweat started dripping down my back. It was always at this moment that the swashbuckling hero made his escape. He would dive into the icy Atlantic, sinking, drowning, gasping for breath, and occasionally swimming. My heart would start pounding a mile a minute, as I saw an old steel ship approaching the hero. The warm steel hull of the ship, creating steam where it made contact with the Artic waters, broke waves like a tornado broke houses: sending pieces flying everywhere. The hero would call out, only to be thrown under by these mighty waves. The ship passed...

An Open Letter to Peaking in High School
Home from Scranton this week for spring break (I know spring hasn’t officially started yet because there’s still no Rita’s but ANYWAY) this seemed to be the week high schools put on their musicals so I went to them, cuz why not? It’s a musical and it’s cheap.

Blink of an Eye
Happy music danced through the night sky, weaving in and out of the ship’s twinkling lights and up to dance around the moon lost forever somewhere in the night. The cruise ship plowed through inky black water away from anything real, causing a cold and forceful wind.

Meet the Neighbors
Cordelia watched in a mini panic as her older brother shrank into the horizon on the horse. Getting him to trust her decision had been no small task. The wizard gave him a mirror that would allow Tom to see what she was doing anytime he looked at it. But not before Tom made it clear that he would be visiting every week to make sure the wizard was doing good on his promise that Cordelia would not be harmed.

Corn or Avocado?
QUICK!! Corn ice cream or Avocado ice cream?!?! As a kid, I didn't think about ice cream flavors; I just shoved it in my face. But once I was older, the biggest debate in my small Pennsylvania town was if corn ice cream with chili flakes from our local Mexican ice cream shop La Michoacana was genius or a culinary disaster. While I do love sweet corn, I have never actually tried corn ice cream until just now, for you guys. You're welcome friends.

Cooking on a College Student Budget
I’m not going to lie to you, I was that college student who did my grocery shopping at CVS for half price ramen noodles that are probably slowly giving me cancer, a can of sweet peas for my week’s serving of vegetables, and a Little Debbie zebra cake for my troubles. I am not a reliable authority on East Asian cooking.

ALVIN
The thick soles of leather shoes crunched over the blackened debris of what had once been a school playground. Smoke still filled the air from natural gas leaks that had caught fire years ago, and what had once been a small stream was dried up leaving behind unidentifiable remains of any animals unlucky enough to survive the blast only to die of thirst. The aerial search had already deemed it a wasteland. 0% chance of human life.
