Earth Day is coming up this week, and one of the most impactful ways to celebrate is to try eating vegan for the day. Luckily, eating vegan is getting easier and tastier all of the time. I’ve highlighted a few of my go-to vegan friendly spots in and around Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood below, all of which are very accommodating of the gluten-challenged (like myself). Whether or not you are vegan, these restaurants are a must-try if you live in or are visiting Chicago.

Sainte Amélie, 2001
I once visited a jewelry shop in a Croatian town. I happened upon it. They kept the door propped open to lure potential customers in from the medieval street, and you could hear, smell, and feel the sea from inside of the tiny shop. This shop only played Yann Tiersen’s Amélie soundtrack on repeat (I went back the following day to confirm). I had been floating in the Adriatic Sea moments before I walked past the shop and heard the music. I arrived in Croatia via ferry the night before after being very fortunately stuck in Venice earlier in the week. The ensuing string of equally beautiful and off-plan happenings landed me here in this pearl shop, and it seemed that the music had come from the notably red and green scenes of Amélie’s Paris (i.e. my subconscious) to tell me that this would be one of the perfect times of my life because, to me, Amélie is a perfect movie about chance. I’d go so far as to call it formative to who I am.

A Minha Querida Tiger Queen: I can’t believe it’s been six years since I visited you up on the top of the earth. You picked me up from the Tromsø airport in your grandmother’s 1980-something blue hatchback, and we listened to Norwegian Leonard Cohen covers while you drove us North along the fjords. You stopped so I could take a picture of a moose and again so I could really breathe in the sea air. Your dad showed me a film about the Sami and the reindeer when we got to your house.

Catch me if you can. Several years ago, a man who couldn’t take a hint wagered that he could guess my friend group’s respective professional fields. If he succeeded, he could buy us all a drink. For the record, we never agreed to the stakes, but he proceeded to guess. Legal (Andrea - correct), marketing (Diana - correct), marketing (Aanya - correct), and librarian (me - incorrect - OMG). I worked in investor relations at a Hedge Fund at the time, although I would say that I spiritually love the idea of being a prescriptive librarian and that I look very sexy in my glasses.
