Hermes and Other Things
It's January 1, 2026 and I rang in the new year smelling like my old self. I bought a bottle of perfume on my inaugural visit to the Magnificent Mile back in 2017. I really didn't have money to spend on expensive perfume. I’d just moved to Illinois from Louisiana and all my old problems would be arriving with my household goods and furniture soon enough. But as I walked through Neiman Marcus in downtown Chicago I felt like I deserved something that said look ma, I made it! I wandered around the summer displays and eventually ended up in cosmetics where this super slender woman dressed like she had just attended the funeral of someone famous or powerful basically assaulted me with scent. Galop d’Hermes.

Unshackled
The vision opens with you in the water. It's tragically clear blue and thankfully salty; your arms are tired from treading water and your legs feel heavy and useless, but you've managed to keep your head above the bubbly ripples this whole time. Saltwater makes for great buoyancy, and you're still here. So that's some kind of victory- regardless of how exhausted you are.

Illicit Affairs
There once was a woman who met a man who was no good for her. They both knew it, but he pursued it. It started subtly, with an excuse to send an email here and a text about something work-related there. She was easy to talk to and refreshingly outgoing. He lived in a world walled in by religion and grossly lacking four-letter words. The dangerous thing- the real problem, if you will- was that they each made the other feel existence. Seen and heard. The banter was perfectly timed. The things they found they had in common seemed otherworldly. She knew it was doomed, but couldn't stop herself from looking at her phone and hoping he'd be in there somewhere. It was harmless.
