I want to know what it took the best writers to get good. I'm curious. The minute Shakespeare, WC Williams, T Hughes, CA Duffy had done their best work must have felt like sky diving. We all should know what that deep catharsis feels like.

He hit the ground with an indignant bump. He looked like a wet rickety folding chair. He had a heart-shaped locket on his neck just over his legs. Instinct made him stand. Instinct and love made his mother lick him. Instinct, love, and evolution had him running at nearly thirty miles an hour fifteen minutes after he was born.

Picture an eight-year-old African boy who didn't know how fortunate he was. We had a mud hut in the countryside, a house in the city and my father's university gave him the use of a wonderful house by Mombasa beach. I still remember walking up and down these marble steps onto a veranda. On the left, there were a set of glass doors which you'd walk through and then down a few steps into the living room. I spent very little time in that living room. The kitchen was opposite (open plan fashion) and I spent very little time in there too. There were bedrooms upstairs I reluctantly slept in because my real home was outside.

how did the greatest writer who ever lived get good
If you're anything like me, you read and write things that won't last hundreds of years. Why? Talent? No. This is not a spiel about talent. This is a spiel about leveling up on your writing and how it's relevant today. That's my passion and in a perfect world, I wish I could build a course to help folks improve on their writing. Something low on technical jargon but almost guarantees a fresh perspective and quick progress on technical skills.

Some musicians realise early that the real instrument is you. So as well as practicing chords, runs, arpeggios they're gauging their effect on you. You can't notate that skill. You can't describe it in any detail, you can barely teach it.
