The Second Shift
The automatic doors whispered open like they knew her name. Five years had passed since Grace last walked through the main entrance of Coastal View Medical Center, but the scent hit her like muscle memory—bleach disinfectant, day-old coffee, and something sterile she could never quite name. It was all precisely the same, only she was different.

The Call Light. Content Warning.
They were turning the old ICU into offices. I hadn’t planned to return, as I had left this place years ago. But, someone sent out a staff email about the renovation, and curiosity has a cruel way of digging its nails into old scars.

Sadie
I never meant to come home with a dog. Two years ago, while off on Thanksgiving holiday, I decided I was ready for a pet. I haven't had any animals since my divorce which was ten years ago. Competition
I live a pretty ordinary life, living in Florida, a state known for its paradise beaches as well as destructive hurricanes. For the last thirty years, I have been a physician assistant and I currently work Monday through Friday in a large healthcare system. At this point in my career, I have a pretty tame position, or at least I did until COVID came along. Be even still, after long days dressed in personal protective equipment, I come home, exercise, eat dinner and then read a book or watch TV; then it's off to bed. It really is a pretty boring life except for the one thing I live for; my dance life.

I Got Rid of My Fitness Tracker and Lost Weight
My fitness tracker was a top-of-the-line model. It could follow all of the parameters that were recommended in order to be healthy and lose weight. Managing my steps was easy. Every day my tracker told me how many I had actually taken. I knew how many calories I burned every single day. Sleep was accurately recorded as good or bad and if I chose to ride my bike or do the elliptical the little machine on my arm even kept track of this. I loved my fitness tracker, until I didn’t.
