Our Oyster Shell Driveway
Daddy loved shucking oysters, littering the driveway with shells. Momma hated oysters and Daddy. Angry voices collided. The screen door slammed. Daddy was gone. Us kids chased his pick-up but he never looked back.

Our Oyster Shell Driveway
When Daddy had a little extra money in his pocket, he would buy a sack of fresh, raw oysters on his way home. By our excitement, you would’ve thought he was Santa with that burlap sack thrown over his shoulder. We squealed with laughter as we danced and shucked oysters on the porch, throwing our shells and cares onto the drive.

The Prom Is Over
When the lights came up and Prom was over, the cleaning crew went to work immediately. There was a flurry of activity taking down the decorations, popping the balloons, and sweeping up glitter. I liked that they kept the music pumping for us. The DJ lights were still flashing blue, yellow, green, and red on the stage. The party mood was alive and a great distraction.

She always gave us candy if we were quiet even though she was a loud, boisterous woman! I could hear her clearly through the telephone’s earpiece even though I was five feet away.

He liked to get to know his ladies. He would usually pick one to follow for a few weeks. If she peaked his interest, he would learn her routine, routes, home, and the people in her life. He needed to know if she had pets, a husband, kids, or an alarm system. He always did his homework. Rarely did he act on impulse. And, that’s why he was so good!

Summer camp was always magical. This particular night was the beginning of the magic. Deep in the piney woods of Louisiana, the shotgun cabin was surprisingly still. The cozy screen-wrapped room was comfortably cool for a summer night. The cicadas, crickets, and frogs called to each other in their nightly symphony, lulling the campers to sleep.

I sat at the bar alone waiting. In all fairness, I went a little early to have a glass of wine in hopes of calming my nerves before my date arrived. I had been out of the dating scene for a while. I wasn’t very confident in online dating. But, my co-workers convinced me to try it. So, here I sit with my glass of Merlot. Honestly, I needed to get out of my house and meet new people anyway.

“Mom, we found a kitten under a bush,” said my daughter. “Can I keep it, please?” “No!” I responded. “There was no mother cat. No other kittens. This little black and white fluff ball was under the bush all alone crying,” she said. “I think it’s very young.”
