I have decided to share some of my journal entries with those who wish to read. These entries reflect my experiences, thoughts, feelings, and opinions during my time incarcerated.

Anger
Anger 3/16/08 I've seen the effects sexual abuse has on a person; witnesses physical, emotional, and drug abuse. Am I angry? I am a victim of physical and emotional abuse. Am I angry? I've lost my marriage, my job, and all of my possessions. It is impossible to be the father my children so desperately need. Am I angry? Yeah I'm Angry!!

Department of Corrections
People think that nothing can possibly happen in the middle of a prison without lots of witnesses seeing everything that happened. What people don't understand is that there are two reasons why that just isn't so - The first being that inmates in general make lousy witnesses. Take something like a fight in the chow hall. Line up everyone that was eating at the time and ask them what happened. Every single one of them will give you a slightly different story. None of them will have seen the whole thing start to finish. Very few of them will have seen only the aftermath. Very few of them will have seen only one of the people involved. Not one of them will tell you, with perfect assurance, that they saw both people fighting from start to finish, despite the fact that most did.

Recovery Awareness
During a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence, I began journaling about my experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Journaling is a reflective exercise and has changed the way I live my life. I was able to look in-depth at my life and the choices that I’d made that led to a prison cell.

Journal Entries
Empathy Here I sit pondering the turmoil I feel when I’m calm, when the world around me seems peaceful. This is the supposed ideal for which I strive, the calm I welcome when I’m not at war with myself or someone else, and yet, during these peaceful times, I am not at ease. Not at all. I have not found peace and feel as is something is missing from my life. I accept this truth of my life, this truth about who I am.

Transitions
I didn’t grow up in a home where the children were treated differently. If I was stacking wood or piling brush, my sister was right there beside me. My mother worked and made just as much or more than my father, placing up a notch above middle class. Really, this discussion question is rather challenging for me. I did not have a normal childhood and that more than anything influenced my experiences. My journal is open; I’m locating brief excerpts that will convey my experiences from childhood to present day. The following represent a very long journey and have very little to do with my gender which will become apparent as you read.

Pitfalls of the Negative Narrative & Randomness
There is an age-old maxim that suggest, “Assume the worst and you’ll never be disappointed.” If I could change just one characteristic about myself it would be to stop filling the inconsistency in another person’s story with my own pessimistic, unfavorable, biased beliefs, and negative narratives. For example, I’m likely to immediately conclude that people do not like me on account of, oftentimes, I do not particularly approve of myself.

Traditions
What we have in life that we can count our own is who we are and where we come from… right? Tradition is the backbone of structure, law, and religion, a guiding faith for morality and society. It is the root of who we are, the link to our heritage that reminds us of who we are by reinforcing who we were. Tradition does that by the very nature of what it is. Unfortunately, it often becomes a corrupting influence and the more you rely on it the more it makes you want to ignore the changes taking place all around you.

The Hole
“Hitting rock bottom” is a phrase that almost everyone has heard when talking about the topic of addiction. For a phrase that is so important to the discussion of addiction, you may think that rock bottom could be easily defined or identified. In all actuality, rock bottom is a concept that means something different to each and every individual struggling with addiction.
