Watching 'Sword Art Online'
The first season of Sword Art Online aired in 2012, and in the time since there has been a sequel series, a theatrical film, a spin-off and at the time of this writing it is in the middle of its third season with a live-action adaptation coming to Netflix. The anime is based off of a series of light novels written by Reki Kawahara. The first season was produced by A-1 pictures with Tomohiko Itou, who also directed Erased and multiple episodes of Death Note, directing the series, while Yuki Kajiura, who also worked on Fate/Zero, Pandora Hearts, the Kara no Kyoukai films and the Madoka Magica films, composed the music for the show.

Watching 'Your Name'
Your Name. is an anime film that came out in 2016, and it was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai, who also took charge of the storyboard duties and the editing of the film. The film was produced by the production company he had spent a majority of his filmmaking career in, CoMix Wave Films. The film came out to universal acclaim from film critics, and at the time of this writing, is the highest grossing anime of all time, sitting at 358 million dollars worldwide. The film had multiple releases in the UK, both in 2016 and again in 2017 for a limited time. Prior to the film's release, Shinkai released a novelization of the film, and in the time since, a manga adaptation had also been released. There is also a live-action adaptation in development from Hollywood that is being produced by JJ Abrams (Star Trek and Star Wars: The Force Awakens) and his production company Bad Robot.

Watching 'B: The Beginning'
B: The Beginning is an original anime produced by Production I.G., the studio also produced Psycho-Pass, Haikyuu, Kuroko no Basket, and the original Ghost in the Shell film to name a few of their work. The show was distributed worldwide by Netflix in 2018. The series is directed by Kazuto Nakazawa and Yoshiki Yamakawa. Nakazawa also worked on the character design of Terror in Resonance, and was the episode director of Samurai Champloo, and Kuroko no Basket. Yamakawa was a key animator on the Digimon Adventure Movie, and directed Little Busters!

Watching 'Captain Marvel'
Captain Marvel is the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe under Disney, a segment of a singular narrative that has being told over the course of 11 years, at the point of this writing. The film is directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the duo behind, Mississippi Grind, It’s Kind of a Funny Story, and Half Nelson. The duo shares writing credits with Geneva Robertson-Dworet whose previous work so far is the 2018 incarnation of Tomb Raider, with story credits going to Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman, who has previously worked on Inside Out and Guardians of the Galaxy respectively.

Watching 'Kakegurui' (Live Action)
The live action Japanese adaptation of Kakegurui aired early in 2018 in Japan while it was distributed worldwide on Netflix once the season finished airing in Japan. The series was co-written and directed by Tsutomu Hanabusa, whose directorial work primarily consists of romance films that are adapted from manga and novels. Two major exceptions in his filmography are the fact that he directed the two Sadako 3D films in 2012 and 2013 and is also the director of Kakegurui. His upcoming work includes the second season of Kakegurui and its feature film that is being released on the May 3rd.

Watching 'Kakegurui'
Kakegurui is a manga that is published by Square Enix, starting its run in 2014. It is still running today and has—at the time of this writing—been collected into 10 volumes. The series is written by Homura Kawamoto, and is illustrated by Tooru Naomura. The manga was adapted into a 12-episode anime by Mappa in 2017, which was distributed internationally through Netflix. The second season, Kakegurui xx, is airing in Japan at the time of this writing, however, it is yet to be distributed on Netflix. As such, this piece will focus solely on the first season of the anime.

Watching 'A Silent Voice'
A Silent Voice is a 2016 Japanese animated feature film that is based on the manga of the same name. The manga is written and illustrated by Yoshitoki Ooima, and ran for two years between 2013 and 2014 released by Kodansha. The manga consists of 64 chapters that has since been collected into seven volumes. The film was directed by Naoko Yamada, whose previous works includes key animation of The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, Clannad, Clannad: After Story, and being an episode director of Free!, Hyouka, and Violet Evergarden to name a few. All of them are works by Kyoto Animation and this is the case with A Silent Voice.

Watching—'Baki'
The story of Baki has been running weekly in the Weekly Shonen Champion magazine since 1991, and has since been collected into 132 volumes. The series is written and illustrated by Keisuke Itagaki, who himself is an experienced fighter, having experience in amateur boxing and Shorinji Kempo. The style of the manga has evolved from the clear 90s aesthetic to keep up with the modern look. The 2018 incarnation of the anime that is currently on Netflix was produced by TMS Entertainment, the same producers as the likes of Orange, D.Gray-Man, Megalo Box, and ReLIFE,to name a few. Four shows which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

Watching—'Violet Evergarden'
Violet Evergarden is a set of two light novels written by Kana Akatsuki and illustrated by Akiko Takase. It was the first work to win the grand prize of the Kyoto Animation Awards novel category, an accomplishment that occurred in 2014. The two volumes were released a year apart during the Christmas of 2015 and 2016, and a 13-episode long anime was produced by Kyoto Animation in 2018 that was distributed worldwide through Netflix. The series was directed by Taichi Ishidate, whose previous works in episode direction and key animation include Clannad, Hyouka, Koe no Katachi, and Kyoukai no Kanata—to name a few.

Watching—'The Garden of Words'
The Garden of Words is the fourth feature film that is directed by Makoto Shinkai. Shinkai also took up the writing of the film alongside various other positions including editing, art direction and back ground art. This ability to operate in multiple areas of the filmmaking process is reminiscent of Robert Rodriguez. The film was produced by CoMix Wave films, who have been in collaborations with Shinkai since the early 2000’s. The Garden of Words is a 46-minute anime that came out in 2013 (which at the time of this writing is six years ago).

Watching 'Alita: Battle Angel'
Alita: Battle Angel is the 2019 live action western adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s manga Battle Angel Alita. The original manga ran from December 1990 to April 1995, with the story being compiled into nine volumes. In the time since, four separate sequels and spinoff stories have also been released. The story was adapted into a two-part OVA in 1993 that was animated by Madhouse with a R rating, and a PlayStation game was also released in 1998.

Watching—'How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World'
How to Train your Dragon: The Hidden World, is the third film in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise. It is written and directed by Dean DeBlois, who also wrote and directed the previous two installments of the franchise, the first of which was co-written and co-directed alongside Chris Sanders. The films are in turn an adaptation of a series of books written by Cressida Cowell.
