What will you do next?
Atop my dusty attic shelf stands a well-leafed, well-loved storybook about a teddy bear separated from his owner working out how to stop being and feeling so lost. His little, furry self is overwhelmed by the magnitude of the world and its apparent lack of signposting. But then eureka! He spots a path then knows what to do next, to walk along it. He spots a boat then knows what to do next, to climb aboard it. He spots a hand then has the idea to hold it. Each charmingly illustrated page ends with the sentence “…and then Bear knew what to do next.”

We all want to have impact. It’s an innate human desire. To belong, to be needed, to be heard and seen. To know that our efforts have an effect, that they positively affect others/society/the world and that there’s solid reason for doing what we do, an alluring rationale for being. Inherently, we want reassuring certainty that we are worthy and that our actions matter (and mattered) to ensure our souls slumber peacefully each night satisfied our toil was, well, worth it.

I’ve always been sober curious. So many in our industry are. Are you? I’ve devoured tomes on the topic of booze from biographies of famous sober idols (Rob Lowe my most indulgent guilty pleasure), to graphic and shocking analyses of high functioning alcoholics, to ‘stop drinking now’ hypnosis meditations, to heart-breaking alcoholic memoirs, to pragmatic guides to giving up.

Did you know your career is a permanent beta?
Have you seen Ken Robinson’s now classic Ted Talk on how schools are killing creativity? Robinson laments an antiquated ethos lingering in our education system which enforces learning by rote. His point is that this yields little value later out in the big wide world for our children who will enter adult life in the most unpredictable and volatile time in history.

How do you learn?
LEARN THESE 4 WAYS TO OPTIMISE YOUR LEARNING Next week my youngest son is going to see an educational psychologist. He’ll sit a couple of papers examining Maths and English ability, he’ll be assessed on verbal and non-verbal solutioning, his processing speed will be calculated and he’ll have lots of discussion about his thoughts on school, inner reactions to classroom situations and more. 2 weeks later I’ll receive a detailed report guiding me and him on his optimal learning path. We’ll have identified gaps in his knowledge per curriculum expectations, the way his brain ignites over different stimulus, how he retains information best and essentially we’ll have a map to ensure he excels and most importantly enjoys learning.

5 Ways to Overcome the Paralysing Fear of Judgement
My son had a haircut and is now in a trauma state. Yes, a micro trauma all things considered but the reaction going on in his young mind and body is symptomatic of trauma. He’s terrified about going to school, being bullied and suffering shame. He’s oscillating from hysteria to immense sadness to pragmatic resolution: “I’m not going to school for a few weeks Mum.” (Sidenote, “Sorry Darling, but yes you are.”).

Just Decide
In the 2 weeks before Roger Bannister made history cracking the 4 minute mile he was on holiday. He wasn’t pounding the track daily, focusing body and mind religiously on the May 6th 1954 race day goal. Nope, he was on holiday. Hiking in Scotland with some non-runner pals strictly briefed not to mention the sub-4 minute target.
