Keep My Treasure Safe
Meeting my best friend was like two souls recognizing each other from a past life. The moment we met, you never would have known that we didn't grow up together. It was an instant connection of loud laughter and conversations that lasted well into the night. Looking at us, we were polar opposites; her dressed in black at all times, myself dressed head to toe in pink, the angriest highlighter you'd ever met. We met on a cold winter night in December, and by January, I was living in her apartment, partying and using together, working illicit jobs to pay the bills and keep ourselves high.

A Bowl of Soup a Day. Runner-up in Small Kindness Challenge.
There was no way that I would have seen a future for myself without my wife. She was the peace that gave me hope; she made our house a home. When we learned of her diagnosis, I didn't ever think that it would end with her buried in the plots we had bought together, a mountain of debt, and a home on the concrete as I moved about the city on crutches. I had spent my life working as hard as I could to give my wife the life that she deserved, and now, it takes me half an hour to shuffle down a single block. There is no home without her.

I Found a Baby Squirrel... Now What?
Between the months of March and April, the first wave of baby squirrels emerges into the world. A second wave of babies makes it’s way to join their siblings, typically between July and August. This means that during prime spring and summer months, we become far more likely to find a baby squirrel somewhere it likely shouldn’t be. You may have found them laying on the ground, or squeaking at the base of a tree. If they’re old enough, they may even chase you, or try scurrying up your leg. This doesn’t mean that they’re dangerous; it means that they feel that they’re in danger, and they’re begging for your help.

How to Raise a Baby Squirrel
Rearing a squirrel by hand is no task for the faint of heart. Just like parenting, it’s a labor of love, and greatly rewarding, even if it is challenging and sometimes stressful. No matter the circumstances of how you’ve come into caring for a baby squirrel, there’s lots that you need to take into account if you’re looking to raise and maintain healthy, lively squirrels who will go on to live a happy life, whether in the wild or in your home. Before you choose to foster a squirrel, first check to see if it is legal in your area, (you can check here for information on Canada and the US) and then follow the following steps to safely keep the baby alive and healthy. Squirrels require specialized care, so becoming a squirrel foster should only be undertaken by someone dedicated to their care.

What to Feed Your Squirrels
Please note that this article will contain affiliate links for easier shopping that help support the author. Much like weaning a human baby off of breastmilk or formula, weaning a baby squirrel off of formula and onto solid foods is an exciting but cautious time. After all, a baby moving onto solid foods is a sign of positive growth, meaning they’re going to need good, nutritious foods to support their ongoing growth and development. As they grow older, their need for proper nutrition becomes paramount, especially if they’re going to be kept as pets. A diet of nuts and veggies won’t be enough to keep them healthy, as they’ll ultimately be deficient in protein, calcium, vitamin D, and the crucial B vitamins and other nutrients they need.

Are Squirrels Good Pets?
How often have you looked up into the trees, and watched an adorable little furry critter bouncing about from branch-to-branch? Squirrels are naturally curious, equipped with bushy tails, tiny squeaks, and a velvety, silky coat that seems perfect for petting and snuggling up with. So many people have looked at the squirrels scavenging through the yard and thought to themselves “I would love to have a squirrel as a pet!”

When Therapy Stumbles
TW: Talk of trauma, abuse I've been in and out of regular therapy for almost a decade. Typical millennial, I know. I've taken great pride in the fact that in the last decade, I've made major strides in the person I've been working to become. It's become easier to recognize signs of becoming overwhelmed, communication is far more effective than it was a decade ago, and it's apparent when triggers are presenting themselves. While I'm diagnosed with a few disorders, two of which are directly related to trauma, it feels like I'm doing way better than before. Boundaries are clear, and I'm better at standing up for myself.
