Not Him. Not Now. . Runner-Up in The Summer That Wasn’t Challenge. Top Story - July 2025.
This was meant to be the summer of progress. New systems, new structure, new home, new routine. A new rhythm to life for all of us. A proper house this time, one that came with more than one bedroom for the four of us, a solid roof, floorboards that didn't screech under pressure. It was supposed to be a summer of painting walls and building garden beds. We had planned to flourish this season.

Seven Years. Runner-Up in The Second First Time Challenge. Content Warning.
You press the door closed behind you, soft and final. Even after all this time, you still don't want it to be heard. The air smells like birch and chicken cooking. Instead of the chill of danger, the warmth of safety has wrapped around you.

She Waits For the Key to Be Given. Content Warning.
There weren't many reasons to sleep anymore. Pure necessity, sure, but beyond that, it wasn't an enjoyable time. Cali didn't find sleep restful. Her little townhome didn't feel like safety anymore, but thanks to a mortgage, she was locked in. Her home was a series of half-done things; a half-eaten dinner that sat next to her spot on the couch. Her sink was full of half-washed dishes soaking the dried on mess. Half her bed was covered in half-folded laundry. Her phone was full of never-sent texts, half written and half-forgotten.
