Free Us & The World Evolves
We as people can not be detained. Free us and the world evolves. That’s all we have ever been screaming and hollering. Listen to Black folks, listen to the White folks that support Black folks. We live in a time where White people who haven’t “tapped in” are slowly getting the message.

Figured I'd Still Bring Wine
"Babe, what are your plans on Friday?" His question shook me out of the email rabbit hole I'd spiraled into during my workday. His voice reminded me that even though I'm working from home, I'm still home. His voice feels like home to me, actually. Stern but soft spoken. Like a lion who lets out an accidental roar during its morning stretch.

The Voice & The Hero
Today, I decided to clear all the stories from my drafts and make them public. I have no idea why some of these pieces have been sitting dormant and collecting dust for almost three years. However, I trust that I did start a good thing. Now, it's time to see it to the finish line. For this piece, I was very inspired by the uplifting legends of Hip Hop. I recognized how much music has carried me through the various phases of my life and this piece is meant to pay homage. Enjoy the read!

My Routine Is My Path to Freedom
The world is spinning faster than ever before these days. Scientists are even considering shifting the way we keep time because of this phenomenon. I am staying a float by losing myself in my routines. From the moment I rise, until the second I go to sleep, believe it or not--I am engaged in a ritual of some sort. “My routine is my path to freedom” is an umbrella phrase that captures my current programming code I've worked vigorously to develop. It’s really as simple as a mindset shift, but those are always easier said than done. Am I right?

Bravery Is My Only Option
Overcoming fear takes as long as it takes. True bravado-- I think-- is rooted in curiosity. The curiosity to ask questions, test theories and explore new terrain. When I think of the card, “Bravery is my only option,” I think of what motivates me to succeed. Bravery is the ability to step up to our last known limitation zone and push beyond it. Sometimes, my last limitation zone is just a footstep behind where I am currently standing. I rarely overcome fears by huge leaps and bounds--expect that one time I went indoor skydiving. That’s something altogether different.

It Feels So Good to be Someone I'm Proud Of.
Today, I am challenged with finding my “why” for dance. When I think of dance, I think of a creative outlet that has been a constant in my life starting from my earliest memories of twerking at the YMCA as a 7 year old. I remember making up dances with my cousins in my grandmother’s living room-- mimicking our favorite girl groups like Destiny’s Child. My all time favorite dance video growing up was Janet Jackson’s “I Get Lonely.” Her fierceness and creativity was something that I always sought after for myself.

"There Are No Mistakes in Art, My Life Story is Art"
Art can not be contained and/or reduced to rules and regulations. Beyonce has brought this idea to life with her Cowboy Carter album release. Her journey into the self by way of the Country music genre has sparked controversy across the nation. She courageously declared her rightful place in this artform with an open letter saying, “this ain't a country album, it's a Beyonce album.” She is no stranger to controversy and even attributes the buzz to the fact that she is that H.B.I.C. Her decision to rise above the music genre barriers is so inspiring. There is a longtime, deep-seated belief that there is no place for Black folks in Country music. That is a bold-faced lie. Music originated with us, we have the experiences, the scars on our hearts and the songs in our souls to invent new instruments and genres alike. Most musical genres root back to the African diaspora. Country music is no different.

"My Own Truth is The Greatest Truth I Will Ever Know"
When people give you an out, take it. A mantra that I live by each day in both micro and macro moments. We live in a society where we are thrown to the mercy of the court of public opinion. These times are unlike any other where gross misunderstandings and propaganda can spread like wildfire among the masses. It’s your word against the world’s. Seldomly are the assumptions and accusations aligned with facts. We live in a world buzzing with alternative facts and there’s not much we can do about it. Ain’t that a trip? Existing in flight or flight mode just to uphold a pristine image can be a losing battle. So, why bother?
