The Only Way Out
There was only one rule: Don’t open the door. The aged brown and black sign hung above the door in a threatening pose. I disregarded its warning and strolled past the ornate jack-o'lanterns and the black and orange streamers hanging in the kitchen. The lights dim, the house silent. My gait felt uneven as I left the kitchen and entered the living room. I gradually pulled out my phone in anticipation of a missed notification. Nothing. Puzzled, I called my friend. No answer. I texted them and left the house.

Here, Never There. Content Warning.
I heard my heartbeat before I felt it. I woke up in a void. Then, blinding light from nowhere. I was standing on the bridge where the accident happened. I sat on the edge of the bridge knowing that I should be dead but, I wasn’t. Knowing that my body is buried but I was here. Fully awake, alert. Right before the fatal collision, I thought about the girls. Hoping they would get out of this unscathed, at the most injured but not dead. My thoughts were interrupted. Good Riddance, he said it clearly and with resolve. I didn’t wait to see if the girls ever came back. Death seemed a better fate than what I was given. I spent days wandering around trying to figure things out. I concluded that I was invisible. Telekinesis and Telepathy came soon after. They gave balance to my invisibility which almost didn’t seem fair. I spent most of my waking life trying to hide. I became someone who most people didn’t notice unless they had to. And the day I was finally noticed was the day I died. Then fate granted me with superpowers that made it easy for me to avenge my death. But going back to the place where it happened would get me noticed. And I already know how that story ended.
