My Clan
Miles under the icy earth, the snow, the sleet, the rain, is an entirely different world. Where gold pours through faerie’s fingertips, where mini waterfalls fall in sheets of clean, cold, fresh liquid. Where tiny, tinkling laughs blanket the ground in joy and summer. Where love, happiness, and flowers roam, where the weary find new strength, and where I live. I know the faeries names by heart, indigo, snapshoot, stem, sky, raven, morningale. I know every blade of grass, every crumb of dirt. I can see the marigolds running across the sunny sky, the miniature ponds, some still frozen from our early winter, reflecting their golden blades. Marigolds have always been my favorite flower. I step out across the threshold of my house, taking a moment to breath in the fresh scent of glory. I run to the edge of our tiny platform, looking out across the long stretch of land that floats so far from earth. Hundreds of the sky clan live here in tiny houses, my clan. I am the daughter of the chief, and I have always been happy with my lot. I follow the path to the real edge, looking down at the land so far below. I whistle, once, twice, and my bird, Sapphire, whistles back. It soars through the sky towards me, its little blue body blending with the white and azure of the sky and clouds behind it.

Monsieur Death
Evangeline I followed Plague up the steps of a chapel. Call me naïve, but I was so angry I couldn’t think. I thought back to the time me and him were on the lawn. I told him it wasn’t right that these gods got to pick on whoever they wanted. It wasn’t right that they should be able to decide who deserved to die. He’d agreed with me. And all along, I was the one he was waiting for. All along, he was doing it behind my back. The very thing we had agreed wasn’t right. Just thinking about it made me grit my teeth. The worst part about it was I was actually starting to put our differences aside and- let’s not beat about the bush- like him. He was the sweetest person I’d ever met. Person, god, whatever. And I had known it was stupid, falling for a god, but I thought there was a chance he reciprocated. He’d seemed happy when I’d decided to come with him. But no, he just needed to make sure I was near him so he could be sure I died. He didn’t just not like me, he couldn’t wait for me to die. A sick feeling clenched my stomach. I’ll ignore him. I told myself. I’ll save the world and then die. I’ve always wanted to know what that would be like anyway. And I’ve always expected to die before I was older. But if me and Liam… maybe living wouldn’t be so bad. Plague’s scratchy voice broke through my angry thoughts.

Monsieur Death
Liam “This all your fault.” Evangeline mumbled for the tenth time. We were sitting opposite cells. The officer had arrested us as soon as he caught up. Neither of us struggled. Nobody could understand us or talk to us. They said they were getting a translator, but it had already been two hours and she was getting impatient.

Monsieur Death
Liam We woke up in India. I had never blacked out before, and the experience wasn’t pleasant. However, despite how uncomfortable the actual blacking out was, waking up was ten times worse. I ached all over, and the cold marble floor wasn’t helping. Evangeline had woken yet. I figured my body had more resilience then hers due to my past god form. I hadn’t thought of that. What if she couldn’t survive passing through a portal?

Monsieur Death
Evangeline The Golden Gate bridge is bigger than I thought it would be. Two big gargoyles stood Out I had never been there, even though I had wanted to, because Mom and Dad had some stupid bad experience there with Uncle Hugh, even though it was in our state. Uncle Hugh had promised to take me, but we’d never gotten around to it, and now he wouldn’t be taking me anywhere. We were actually going to go this year. Liam touched my shoulder and I nodded at him.

Monsieur Death
Evangeline I had an idea right before we managed to sneak out the gate. “Wait!” I hissed. He nodded. I ran around my house and jumped the window. I heard a pounding on my door, so I grabbed the box of money from under my bed and hid under the bed. My mom gave up knocking and opened the door. She walked in and looked out the window. I slithered next to her and snatched the car keys from her pocket and hid again. She left, calling my name. I slid out the window and ran back to where Liam waited. I held up the car keys.

Monsieur Death
Liam I hated Shalka’s. They were monsters of plague and disease. and loved to suck the life out of their victims. I know, being the god of death, I should love that stuff! But they had tried to kill far too many times. Doctor Plague, the god of disease, was supposed through o keep them hidden away in Despair, but instead, he considered them his pets, and mostly let them run around, hurting gods and causing issues. But unleashing them on humans? He was not supposed to do that. Me and him had never gotten along, but defying a direct order from Judgement himself was across the line. What was he doing?! He had always gone out of his way to cause trouble for me, but I never expected this. It just appeared in the dining room, teeth and claw. It leaped at us. I was too slow to protect Evangeline, but she was plenty capable of protecting herself. She brought up her fork and stabbed it in the eye. Blood spilled down her arm, but she didn’t seem to notice she backed away, gripping her bad shoulder. It seemed to be hurting her less. She snatched her bowl and threw it in at the monster. The ceramic shattered harmlessly against its skin, but I was there by then. I grabbed its neck and pulled it down, chocking and gasping. It managed to throw me off and head for Evangeline again, but she had grabbed a handful of paper towels and put them in the stove. She waved it in front of its face, causing it to reconcile and hiss. When it started going out, she drove it into its mouth. It shook its head and yelped, jumping around and demolishing the kitchen. I jumped in it with a kitchen knife and stabbed it through the head. It shrieked and screeched until it shriveled up into the wound, burning away until it was nothing but the plague pendent it wore around its neck. We both stood there, breathing hard.

Monsieur Death
Liam As soon as we parted after lunch, I knew she was in danger. I guess it just came as being her guardian. Maybe it was creepy, but I followed her. I went around the house and saw her sitting in her bedroom with the window open. She sat there for a while, looking at her phone and tapping the bed beside her. She finally got up and went into the room next to her, which I supposed was her bathroom. She came out in different clothes, a camouflage tank top and ripped jeans. Suddenly, with a quick look around, she pulled a shoe box and counted the money before closing it. Then she climbed out of her window and started to walk away. I could only press myself against the wall and hope she didn’t see me. She didn’t, though, and seemed lost in thought. She wandered into the woods across the street. I followed her, slipping behind trees and begging her silently not to turn around. She stopped when she reached a quick river, lined with jagged rocks. A tiny, thin tree branch had fallen across. I suddenly understood why Judgement had me watching her. There was no way she was going to get out of this alive. Surprisingly, she made it about three quarters of the way across, before the branch broke under her feet. She closed her eyes as the rocks hurtled towards her head. But I was already there. Somehow, my arm was full of strength and power, and I hauled her up with no problem. But as soon as she was safely on shore, my newfound strength disappeared. We both lay gasping on the dirt.
