Dune
Okay so I am new to this Dune fan train, I saw the first film just a couple of weeks ago on re-release and I fell in love with it immediately. Not only is the film itself a feat of filmmaking but the story is one of the best to be entered into the fantasy catalog. We just got back from seeing part 2 and I have many thoughts on the film itself and its apparent impact. But I will start by saying that I really hope they decide to dive into the second and third books and continue with the movies. Even if it's just the ones that center House Atreides, I am super in love with this story. And they definitely left the door open to continue.

Why Xander Harris Sucks
By now we all know that Xander Harris from Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a Joss Whedon self insert. That certainly explains why, as a person, he sucks just so much. Xander is a whiny, entitled, disgusting excuse for a human person (and so is Joss so hey! The self insert worked!) but I could never make such a bold, distinct statement without receipts so here we go. All of the 7 seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Xander Harris proved himself to be absolutely terrible.

SuperWhoLock. Top Story - March 2024.
I started this series to kind of get to the bottom of what the connection between these shows was. What exactly inspired such a fervent fandom and why these three shows? Well I recently went to my very first Doctor Who convention at Gallifrey One and a pride panel kind of gave me my answer. I think the answer to what connects these shows and what connects the fandom is the queerness of all three shows.

Fringe
Okay so we know that I love media analysis but sometimes it starts feeling more like my job then something I genuinely enjoy doing. Occasionally it feels like I have nothing to watch to relax and that everything is content. BUT I do love talking about the shows that I love so we are going to talk about them in the most rapid-fire, bullet-pointed kind of way so that I don’t turn the things that I love into homework for myself. Today we will be talking about the broad strokes of why I love Fringe. Fringe is an incredible science fiction show that my husband made me sit down and watch despite my hatred of gross things. So here we go.

Teen Dramas
Teen Dramas are a right of passage for every middle to high school aged kid. That age is pumped full of hormones and confusion and the teen drama tv genre is a perfect reflection of that. The first relevant TV show that could be considered the real start of the teen drama genre is the original 90210 that started in 1990 and ended in 2000.

Teen Titans
Another popular team that people don’t seem to know the history of is the Teen Titans. This is one of my favorite teams mostly because Raven exists but also because this is another team that got really good animated treatment about 20 years ago and their live action treatment has been questionable at best. Their comic book appearances have definitely been more frequent then their on screen ones. But here we go we are talking about the history of the Teen Titans.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
We just wrapped up the best of Buffy the Vampire Slayer series where I went season by season depicting the good and the bad of each particular season. What I may have glazed over is the actual impact that Buffy the Vampire Slayer had on society and on television in general so I am doing a whole video essay on my favorite show. The good, the bad, the very bad and the show's impact.

The Justice League of America
The Justice League of America is one of the most recognizable teams in comics and for good reason. As a team they have been around since the 60s and they have had many live action and animated appearances. DC generally is really good about their animated work so there is lots to pull from so as we go through the history of this team I will not only be recommending comics but I will also be recommending animated movies and of course the TV shows. No live actions. Zack Snyder is the worst thing that has ever happened to the Justice League, you can try and blame Joss Whedon but there was no fixing that script. So here we go.

Live Action Avatar the Last Airbender
I had a very short list of must haves for this first season. I gave this show so much leeway, and I tried very hard to be open minded about the inevitable changes that were going to be made to this show. I have complained a lot about said changes because they were all unnecessary and executed very poorly. But words can not express how happy I am that they kept the sexism of the Northern Water Tribe. It is so integral to Katara’s character development and so important to the story as a whole.

Live Action Avatar the Last Airbender
Again the bare minimum of this show has been fulfilled. The monster design looks really good but there is just no depth to the actual body of the show. All of the storylines are so hollow. I think they brought Sokka and Katara to the spirit world in an attempt at cheap character development because they have fucked it up until this point. But again it just comes across as an unearned moment. You wouldn’t need to change a bunch of shit to fill out these characters if you just did what you were supposed to do the first time. This shouldn’t be the first time we see any actual depth to these characters, it's episode 5, that is inexcusable.

Comic Book Recommendations
So we know that I am known for reading, analyzing, and writing about superhero comics. That is definitely the genre where my expertise lies. That said, there are some excellent non-superhero comics that I would love to recommend. These are from a few different genres. We’ve got some cozy ones, some action, magic and mystery but all non-superhero comics so that there is something for everyone.

Live Action Avatar the Last Airbender
Iroh and Aang are captured together, again before we meet Bumi. I would love to know what the hell was going on in that writers room. What led to the decision to just fuck structure and season distinctions? Why exactly did you think that these storylines needed to happen now? Why did we decide to cut actual season 1 moments that would have helped the impact of these eventual storylines? And why exactly don’t you people seem to understand storytelling 101? Here's the deal adaptations are the easiest, simplest form of writing. They take little to no knowledge, creativity or even thought and yet these writers weren't even capable of that. If you are trained as a writer adaptations are easy work, this is ridiculous.
