‘Coward, coward, coward,’ he hissed, the noise harmonious with the sizzling of burning flesh. They weren’t in this village yet, but it was only a matter of hours. He’d seen already his friend, his Chloe, the video streamed live from someone at the cafe opposite her tattoo shop. The very place he’d received his own mark. The chains, the unnecessary brute force they used to take her. She must have done a cover-up for an undercover — surely she wasn’t reckless enough to still be drawing new ones? How they took her. It was only a matter of time. Were they identifying us by our sudden, unexplained burns, he thought, or our fresh, cover-up tattoos? The kippah even without the Star?

‘It’s the best offer you’ll get,’ he said, running a waxy hand through his hair. ‘Trust me. It’s your word against his, and you could do a lot worse than twenty thousand. That’s a nice little payout—think of the shopping, hey?’ he laughed, discussing a trifle. ‘I’m advising you to take it. Of course, it’s your decision, but I do have the paperwork here ready for you to autograph.’
