Merial in the Mud
Most considered Fritz to be a dim child, his elementary school teachers, his older brothers and sisters, Dianne, Marco, Trent, Elizabeth, Taylor, and Dean, and his mother and father, who were as he remembers, exceptional professionals. Fritz often felt helpless as he never did what he was asked of, as in the time that it took for him to learn something, someone else would step in and do it for him. Saying, “Fritz, you’re too slow!” and “Maybe when you’re older, egghead.”

The Cashier
It’s daybreak, it’s overcast. No one is around. It’s that part of town, on the periphery of the city, and you can spot who might be ambling towards you blocks out. Moonlighters are finishing graveyard, and I can spot one from a window of an urban convenience store. She must be running some other operation, looking like that. She’s got long, bubblegum pink hair. Is that a wig? And her eyes are doused in hot pink, to match her lips. Blush hits her cheekbones and tip of her nose, which carries a ring down the center. She’s got one of those rubbery, malleable faces, one you want to stick your thumbs into. She pops this bright orange bubble and dreamily turns the page of a magazine. I get close to the window to see what she’s reading, and it looks like smutty porn, I spy some fake tits and estranged cocks. As I’m peering in, too close, she glances at me and rolls her eyes. I figure I should walk in and buy something, you know, try to be polite.

The White and Black of it
My story takes its first puff in the charmingly seedy, Reno, Nevada, the biggest little city. The bulb lit, blinking arch reads just that, passing through downtown on Lake street. I often did, pass through, as after the long and grueling college classes at UNR I ambled my way downtown to the local coffee shop, Java Jungle. On that particular night at the open mic, I, an androgynous little man with cheese pizza cheeks, warm cookie eyes, a sharp jawline asked a seemingly inconspicuous man, dressed in black and confined to a wheelchair, for a cigarette.
