Plantar fasciitis is a common foot condition characterized by inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, connecting your heel bone to your toes. It's a prevalent cause of heel pain and typically results from straining the ligament that supports your arch.
People with plantar fasciitis often experience stabbing pain near the heel, especially when taking the first steps in the morning or after long periods of rest. The pain can also be triggered by prolonged standing or physical activity.
Risk factors for developing plantar fasciitis include wearing improper footwear, having high arches or flat feet, obesity, engaging in activities that put stress on the feet (like running or dancing), and having tight calf muscles or Achilles tendons.
Treatment may involve rest, stretching exercises, wearing supportive footwear or orthotics, applying ice, using night splints, and in some cases, physical therapy or corticosteroid injections. Severe cases might require more aggressive treatments like shockwave therapy or surgery, but those are typically rare.
