They Cloned Tyrone

The Ultimate “Woke” Movie *Spoilers*

They Cloned Tyrone is the ultimate “woke” movie. For those of you who haven't seen it, Fontaine is the main character who is a drug dealer, Yo-Yo is a prostitute, and Chester is a pimp. We're constantly shown scenes where Fontaine's new clone was introduced, “awakening” from slumber. We’ve seen Yo-Yo, Chester, and Fontaine putting two and two together and noticing the problematic things happening in their hometown, Glendale. Those are the obvious reasons why this movie would be considered woke. However, there’s something I noticed in the movie that made this claim even more known.

Before I get into my reasoning unto why I consider “They Cloned Tyrone” as a woke movie, I want to get into the true definition of woke and where it came from. Woke was a term created for black people becoming aware of racial injustices. Which in my opinion, is very blunt in the movie. The scene with the teacher getting a relaxer sums this up perfectly. She was concerned about the underfunding of schools. She was very aware. But as soon as the relaxer touched her head, she suddenly became relaxed and looked like she was going to sleep. Everything from the music, to the food, religion (fake prophets), all puts us in the mood of going back to sleep. The term woke according to Wikipedia, was created by “a black American folk singer-songwriter, Huddie Ledbetter aka Led Belly, used the phrase ‘Stay Woke’ as part of a spoken afterword to a 1938 recording ‘Scottsborro Boys’, which tells the story of nine black teenagers and young men falsely accused of raping two white women in Alabama.”

Now to the unsuspecting thing that I've noticed, the number seven. The number seven is seen throughout the movie. Fontaine was a big shot in Glendale. He wanted his money and would do risky things to get it. Well, like the white man said, every boss has a boss. Fontaine met his match, and was killed after taking money from Chester. He was shot in his car seven times.

Recalling the situation, Chester said Fontaine was shot six times, which was a deliberate miscount in my opinion. After realizing Fontaine was cloned, the trio searched and found the underground. They discovered the other clones of Fontaine, Chester, and other locals (not all). Out of rage, Fontaine shot his clone that was in a tube, seven times.

Towards the end of movie where everyone came together to free the other clones and people being experimented on, Fontaine shot one of the scientists that worked in underground, seven times.

The number seven repeating itself once again.

Now you’re probably wondering, ‘What does the number seven have to do with being woke?'. Acoording to Patricia Kirckman, the author of The Complete Idiots Guide; Numerology Workbook, the number seven is the number of self knowledge, your true spirit, and its considered a philosophical number. Based on my experience, when you learn about self and are self aware, you're more aware of the world around you, making you the perfect candidate for being woke.

Numerology.com states "the number seven is both deep and wise, and goes the extra mile to find the truth. They find the truth by questioning, researching, listening, and sensing", all the thngs Fontaine, Chester, and Yo-Yo exhibited.

The number seven doesn't only have significance in Numerology, it's constantly brought up in the Holy Bible. The number seven in the Bible means completeness and divine perfection. Interestingly enough, the number six is the number of the beast/man. God is seven, and humans are six. Which is probably why Chester only counted six shots when Fontaine's clone was killed. Seems to me like Fontaine transformed into a better being from the last time that his clone was killed.

According to Biblestudy.org, "The number seven is the foundation of God's word. It's meaning is tied directly to creation". It's also pointed out that the number seven is mentioned 735 times. Jesus perfomed seven miracles on God's holy Sabbath day. There were seven men in the old testament, who were considered a 'man of God'. It also states " In the book of Revelation, there are seven churches, seven angels, seven seals, seven trumpet plagues, seven thunders, and the last seven plagues." Lets not forget, God made the Heaven and Earth in a six day period, and rested the seventh-day.

The number seven is the number of self knowledge. According to Oxford Languages, self knowedge is the understanding of oneself or one's motive. Fontaine met his original towards the end of the movie. The OG Fontaine was so traumatized by his brother's death (his brother was killed by the cops because of racial profiling), he belived in 'assimilation over annihilation'. Being black was such an inconvenience to him to the point where he began creating clones that resembled white men with afros, pointing out that the hair was hard for him to get right. This could be referencing people who date interracially, not for love, but to erase their blackness. A lot of mixed race people have tightly curled hair, like the white man with the afro. Fontaine the clone didn't agree with the OG Fontaine's motive. Realizing that his ways wasn't right, Fontaine the clone had no problem getting OG Fontaine killed after being aware of his motives. This is the key to self awareness, learning that your past mindset is problematic, and killing off that side of you to evolve into a better person.

Wow I had no idea that Led Belly coined the term "woke". That's kind of amazing, I really thought it was a modern word. Also I saw this movie too long ago to remember it clearly, but I might have to rewatch, with your write up in mind.
