The Locked Room

“There are spirits in the locked room upstairs, which is why no one goes there.”

This incident happened almost thirty years ago and it is something I experienced myself. At that time, I had come to Sukkur for my job. My maternal uncle lived there, so I stayed at his house for a few days until I could arrange separate accommodation. I had come to my uncle’s house after many years. In childhood, I used to visit occasionally with my mother.

Only a few days had passed. My job was new and demanding, and I was deeply occupied with it. One night, I returned home late. After having dinner, I walked toward my room when I suddenly felt as if someone had gone upstairs. My room was right in front of the staircase, and upstairs there was a room that remained locked. On the very first day, my uncle had strictly forbidden me from going up there, though he never explained the reason. I did not ask further either.

But that night, the thought of someone going upstairs disturbed me. Out of curiosity, I went up. As I reached the door of the room, I heard the sound of someone laughing from inside. My heart started pounding violently. Driven by natural curiosity, I opened the door. There was no one inside. I looked around carefully. Because the room had been locked for a long time, it was covered in dust. Assuming the sounds were just my imagination, I turned back to leave when suddenly my aunt called out to me from behind.

I was startled. I was surprised to see her upstairs because she never climbed the stairs. She told me that she had seen me going upstairs and followed me. When she asked why I had come up, I told her that I felt someone had gone into the room, so I came to check. Then we both started going downstairs together. We had only descended two or three steps when I again felt someone laughing behind me. Since my aunt was with me, fear crept into my heart. Trembling, I slowly turned my head—and my senses left me completely.

Standing behind me was not my aunt, but a girl with a burnt face. Her eyes were red and terrifying. Overcome with fear, I fell down the stairs. The girl began moving toward me slowly. My voice was stuck in my throat, but with great difficulty, I managed to scream. Hearing my scream, my uncle and aunt rushed out of their room.

My condition had become extremely serious. I was half-unconscious, yet I could still feel the presence of that girl in front of me. My uncle seemed to understand what had happened to me. He recited prayers over me and took me into his room.

After a few days, my condition gradually improved. When I narrated the entire incident of that night, my uncle told me that spirits lived in the locked room upstairs, which was why no one ever went there. However, he said they never harmed anyone. Perhaps I had opened the door, and that was why such an incident occurred.

After that, for as long as I stayed in my uncle’s house, I never even stood near the staircase again.
