The Bus Ride

By William Sangalli

As I sat on the bus, traveling to the downtown area for work, I looked around myself and felt content within. Drifting into thought, a memory sneaked up on me. My —nd birthday was last Thursday, and usually, those sorts of events, especially my own, brought such a drag on my self-esteem.

It was the usual large gathering that presented itself each year for any birthday in my family. Close friends and family get together to celebrate a day of life. Most of the people who would come to any family event typically were the same ones who would get together for Sunday night dinner.

My uncle would always give out some sort of homebrewed ale that he was trying to get down to a science for his liking, and also use it as an easy gift to others. And each time he gave it out, the individual receiving it would appreciate it as much as the last time they were gifted it. The hardy laugh he would let out while handing you that wrapped bottle he filled to the brim with ale always became contagious for anyone around.

As the gathering picked up and everyone had arrived at Nonna's, I started looking at the faces of my family members as they all mingled with one another. Enjoying laughs and stories of past days—reminiscing on how the neighborhood used to look, who lived where, and how we would all get into trouble with each generation of the Molagen family that lived down the block in the white brick house. I couldn't help but form a smile on my face while hearing these stories. Knowing I have people who can relate to past days that I have lived through, just as they had, was oddly comforting. Why was I seeking that sort of thing when I knew at any moment I could be taken from this earth?

I snapped back into consciousness and out of that train of thought. I was back on the bus. Gazing to the front and looking out the right side window. The gray clouds and fog surrounding downtown made it feel as if this bus was alone on the road. My mind drifted again but quickly was jolted back when the bus took a sharp turn off an exit. Swerving on the road and off the ramp while crashing through the cement wall. Plummeting to the ground.
