Paul Kagame seized power in Rwanda after his Rwanda Patriotic Front captured Kigali in mid July thereby quelling the genocide that resulted in the death of 800000 Rwandans particularly from the Tutsi ethnic group.

Rwanda Patriotic Front was founded in 1987 by Rwandan refugees mainly from the exiled Tutsi who were in Uganda.

The RPF led by inspirational Fred Rwigyema joined Yowere Museveni to fight in the bush war against Idi-Amin's regime.

After Idi-Amin was ousted from power, Rwigyema started making plans to invade Rwanda from their Ugandan bases. By the time Rwigyema was planning his attack on Rwanda, Museveni had dispatched Kagame to USA for military training.

On October 1st, 1990, RPF led by Rwigyema invaded Rwanda and conflict broke out. The attack was badly planned because the Rwigyema was killed in the conflict the next day leaving members of the RPF disillusioned.

When Paul Kagame heard about the death of Fred Rwigyema, he returned to Uganda and took over the leadership of RPF. He took more than three years in reorganizing the militia group. He put his military strategy into use and refined the group. He patiently waited for the right time to make a move on Rwanda.

Kagame's chance to invade Rwanda came after a genocide broke out in April 1994 following the assassination of President Habyarimana. Paul Kagame's RPF invaded Rwanda and quelled the genocide by Hutu militias.

After seizing power, he became the vice president to Pasteur Bizimungu a moderate Hutu. However, Bizimungu was forced to relinquish power in 2000 following a power struggle with Kagame.

Kagame has been the president of Rwanda since 2000. He recently won an election making it his fourth term in office.

Though Kagame has rebuilt Rwanda, I think that he has overstayed his welcome. He should give way for another person to lead Rwanda. Amending Rwanda's constitution in order to allow him to perpetuate himself in office is dictatorial.
