The original PlayStation launched in Japan in December 1994 and globally in 1995, becoming the first console to sell over 100 million units within ten years. The PlayStation 3 followed in 2006, achieving sales of over 87.4 million units by 2017, while the PlayStation 4, released in 2013, became the fastest-selling console ever, moving a million units on launch day. The latest iteration, the PlayStation 5, launched in 2020, sold 10 million units in just 249 days, surpassing its predecessor's record.
The primary controllers for the PlayStation series are the DualShock gamepads, which have sold 28 million units as of June 2008. The brand has significantly impacted the gaming industry and continues to evolve with each new console release.
