The Paxton Art Centre and Café is well known to art lovers and others living in and around the Crystal Palace district of South East London. Just 15 minutes from Central London by Overground train and various bus routes. The Centre stages frequent art shows, classes and other events.

November's exhibition features five artists with a wide range of contemporary styles. The image above shows some of the fabulous work of artist and art therapist Susan Cox. Vibrant colours and bold styles bring out the strength of the characters depicted in her often allegorical work.

His and Hers (above) presents a man and a woman, the man holding an open script. The two appear to be performing. An intriguing and enticing oil on wax painting by Susan.

Carry Hornby

Some of my favourites in the exhibition include these Chinese brush paintings by Carry Hornby.

Chinese Calligraphy Art, says Carry, promotes the practice of mindfulness for wellbeing. This artform is often used to depict mythological scenes and of course, as below, stylisation of Chinese characters.

Can you see the fish and the rabbit? How about the Elephant, the Ox and each of the other characters?

Paxton Art Centre

The Paxton Centre was set up as a community creative hub in August 2016 by owner Beth, who continues to run the Centre full time. She also teaches pottery workshops at the Centre. This unique business was her 10 year vision. Here she combines her art and craft business ‘Handmade Palace’ and her pottery workshops.

Rakel and Sarah Wienberg

Danish sisters Sarah and Rakel consider their art to be a testament to the synergy of sisterhood — a shared language that transcends words.

To me, their work embodies movement and dynamic expression. Emotion runs though these spare but complex pictures.

Paula Mary

These colourful florals immediately capture the attention and imagination. Rendered in pastel and acrylic it is hard not to detect echoes of Georgia O'Keeffe in this wonderful images.

After a late life ADHD diagnosis, Paula learnt more about herself on a deeper level and began to understand why she found it difficult to operate in a neurotypical world. After taking various art classes as a therapeutic outlet, she reawakened a passion to create and started to take her art seriously.

Ray Taylor

Digital art that demystifies and debunks popular perceptions of art and artists.

Let's debunk, demystify and disrobe art: Taylor

Finally moving on to my work, which is a collection of designs from 2023 and 2024 that have been created using basic digital design tools. Mostly originating as illustrations for my short stories and poetic work. These pieces incorporate either photography (using my ancient iPhone) or in some cases images produced from generative 'artificial intelligence' products. The works are intended to challenge perceptions of what defines art, how we see it, and how we react to it.

The works include Culinary Magic, a mixed form of digital photography and typography, and which was previously shown at the Tate Modern.

The Paxton Centre November Art Show is open until the end of November 2024 at The Paxton Centre, at 52 Anerley Hill, Crystal Palace, London, SE19 2AE UK.
