Nebraska Cornhuskers football
The Nebraska Cornhuskers football team is a powerhouse in college football, representing the University of Nebraska–Lincoln in the Big Ten Conference. Their home games at Memorial Stadium, which they’ve played in since 1923, have seen an impressive sellout streak dating back to 1962.
Historically, Nebraska ranks among the top programs, boasting the eighth-most victories in FBS history, with 46 conference championships and five national titles (1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, and 1997). Notably, the teams from 1971 and 1995 are often highlighted as some of the greatest ever. The program has produced three Heisman Trophy winners—Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier, and Eric Crouch—alongside many other Hall of Fame inductees.
Nebraska’s early success came from 1900 to 1916, featuring five undefeated seasons and a record 34-game unbeaten streak. Significant national success began under coach Bob Devaney, who led the team to two national championships and eight conference titles in his eleven seasons. His decision to promote Tom Osborne to offensive coordinator in 1969 laid the groundwork for Nebraska's enduring success. Osborne, who took over as head coach in 1973, became known for his innovative approaches to strength training and his effective I-formation offense.
After Osborne’s retirement in 1997, the program experienced a period of transition with five different head coaches before hiring Matt Rhule in 2022, aiming to restore the team to its former glory.
