Swarna always felt like she was riding an emotional rollercoaster she hadn’t signed up for. One moment, she was laughing with her best friend over a silly joke, the kind that made her stomach hurt from giggling too much. The next, an overwhelming wave of sadness hit her out of nowhere, as if someone had turned off all the lights inside her.
It wasn’t always like this. Or maybe it was, and she just hadn’t noticed until now. Lately, the swings felt stronger, more sudden. A misplaced word from her mother would send her into a spiral of frustration, only for her to feel guilty minutes later. A song on the radio could make her inexplicably teary-eyed, yet an hour later, she’d be on top of the world again, planning weekend adventures.
Her best friend, Aisha, noticed. “Swaru, are you okay? You’ve been… different lately.”
Swarna shrugged. “I don’t know. I just feel everything so much. One second, I’m fine, and the next, it’s like I can’t control my own mind.”
Aisha squeezed her hand. “Maybe you don’t have to control it. Maybe you just have to ride the waves.”
Swarna thought about that. Maybe she didn’t need to fix herself—maybe she just needed to understand herself. So, she started paying attention. Noticing the triggers. Giving herself space. Letting herself feel without guilt.
The rollercoaster didn’t stop, but with time, she learned how to hold on better.
