who was just 13 when the two fell in love. Given their 20-year age gap,

Cannes darling "May December" has released its first trailer featuring Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, and Charles Melton. Directed by filmmaker Todd Haynes, the film initially premiered in May and is set to have a limited theatrical release before becoming available on Netflix.
Loosely based on the true story of Mary Kay Letourneau, an American teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with one of her 12-year-old students, "May December" follows Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Portman), who takes on the role of Letourneau stand-in Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Moore) for a film.
Elizabeth seizes the opportunity to spend time with Gracie in order to fully understand her character, thereby delving into the complexities of Gracie's family connections. This family includes Gracie, her young husband Joe Yoo (Melton), and the child they conceived when Joe was just 13 years old. Gracie gave birth to this child while behind bars.

The screenplay for "May December" was written by Samy Burch, and the movie also features D.W. Moffett, Piper Curda, Elizabeth Yu, Gabriel Chung, Cory Michael Smith, and Lawrence Arancio. After its premiere at Cannes, Variety's chief film critic Peter Debruge described "May December" as a thought-provoking drama that pulls the audience deep into its narrative.
Debruge emphasizes the constant portrayal of characters, noting the meta-level presence of Moore playing a woman convicted of influencing a minor—an element that raises intriguing questions about reality and representation, reminiscent of the film "Kate Plays Christine." Haynes skillfully avoids making moral judgments, opting for a more emotional approach and trusting viewers to unravel the film's layers on their own. While Portman's role holds more conceptual weight, Moore sets a high standard for believability as the "real" Gracie, a woman who regards herself as naive but is heavily invested in how she will ultimately be depicted. She employs subtle manipulation to ensure her portrayal aligns with her desires.
"May December" will open the 2023 New York Film Festival in late September before its limited theatrical release on November 17. The film will then be available for streaming on Netflix starting December 1.
