How to Romanticize the Art of Decision Making
Transforming Choices into Masterpieces of Intentional Living
Have you ever struggled to make a choice and spent hours, days, or even months on it?
And yet, after making the correct choice, felt regret?
I have, and I continue to battle. But now, I’ve found a new way that helps me speed up this process while making it more authentic to myself.
Guideline
First step: ask for a sign
Second step: wait for the sign
Third step: act according to the sign
Disclaimer: While I am incredibly fascinated by spirituality, my approach is not based on it. On the contrary, it is founded on psychology.
First step: ask for a sign
Whenever you are confronted with an option and struggle to decide, ask for a sign.
Imagine you had to pick between going on vacation or remaining home to save money.
You feel like you need that vacation; work has been incredibly stressful recently, and your mind and body simply need that relaxation.
However, the instant you dreamed about going on vacation, you began second-guessing yourself, thinking about how much money it would cost, how you could save that money, and waiting until Christmas for a trip.
Ask for a sign to assist you in making that choice. Not literally; you don’t need to beg for a sign out loud, but let yourself know you are waiting for one.
Second step: wait for the sign
Trust me, the indication will come, because your brain is wiser than you think it is.
Do you recall the ARA system in our brain? If you have no clue what I am talking about, I suggest you read this post, but don’t fear; I’ll offer a small explanation so you know what I am talking about.
Our ARA system is the one accountable for you noticing red vehicles when you purchase yourself a red automobile. There’s the same quantity of red automobiles, but your ARA system did not reveal them to you until you were interested in them.
But how is this linked to waiting for a sign?
Well, when given an option, we always know what we want, but sometimes overthinking distorts our heads. Yet the decision is still there, hidden deep down in our psyche.
When asking for a sign, what you are doing is enabling your subconscious mind to inform your ARA system what it is you desire, and the ARA system will adjust your attention and show you.
Now assume you really want to go on a vacation, but overthinking about spending money and feeling guilty and not deserving of a vacation is clouding your mind, leaving you unable to decide.
How would a sign look?
You can be handed a leaflet from a travel agency.
Your buddy could phone you to inform you about their trip.
You go shopping and discover a softener with a tropical aroma and an image of an island on it.
While listening to a piece of music, you suddenly discover how it discusses something linked to travels you didn’t notice before.
Signs may come in any shape, at any moment, and for as many times as you wish.
You’ll know it is a sign when you find yourself pondering about the difficulty and questioning, Is this a sign?
Third step: act according to the sign
Now I realize this is easier said than done, but think of it this way.
How many times have you taken a decision because it was the correct one and subsequently felt regret?
Regret because, certainly, it may have been the appropriate one for your family, for your overthinking mind, for your relationship, for your boss… just not the correct one for you.
When asking for a sign, then behaving according to the sign you receive, you are being loyal to yourself. Your brain is revealing what you desire and, consequently, what will make you joyful and regret-free.
In an era with so much connectedness to the world, we detach from ourselves so we may offer the world the version of ourselves we believe would fit best in society.
And we need to combat that. We need to put ourselves first; we need to fight for our happiness and our actual aspirations, because that is not selfish; it is clever and bold.
The wonderful thing is we can do this for free and even come to know ourselves better along the process.
I have been doing this for some time now, and you couldn’t even begin to understand the amount of signs I have gotten.
So numerous that it even seems overwhelming, and not in a negative way.
Overwhelming because it is interesting to observe how your mind is talking with you and how it won’t stop sending you indications until you make the proper choice.
Keep learning.
