House With a Crossed Earth Floor / Fukei Co.
A Tranquil Home in Miyagi: Embracing Nature Through Design

This is the story of a house I designed, located on a hill in Miyagi, Japan. My approach was to create a plan that crisscrosses the site, allowing the house to form a close, intimate connection with the garden surrounding it. The garden itself is divided into four distinct sections, each serving a unique purpose. There's a bright, spacious area where children can run freely, a quiet garden that can be viewed from the bathroom and bedrooms, a decorative garden that enhances the façade, and a parking space.

What ties it all together is an earthen floor that flows throughout the first floor. This floor subtly connects the fresh air from the park trees behind the entrance with the air from the garden, making the space feel harmonious. Throughout the day, light from the four gardens and skylights pours into the home, changing the colors and atmosphere as time passes.

This house, built in 2024, covers an area of 93 square meters. I worked alongside Midori Oshima, and together we brought this vision to life. The photographs, captured by Daisuke Komatsu and our firm, Fukei Co., reflect the essence of the design and the beauty of the space.
