Fresno, California, is a major city located in the San Joaquin Valley and serves as the county seat of Fresno County. Covering approximately 115 square miles, it had a population of 542,107 as of the 2020 census, making it the fifth-most populous city in California and the most populous inland city in the state.
Founded in 1872 as a railway station for the Central Pacific Railroad, Fresno was incorporated in 1885. Over the years, it has developed into an economic hub for the region, heavily tied to large-scale agricultural production. Geographically, Fresno is centrally located in California, about 220 miles north of Los Angeles, 170 miles south of Sacramento, and 185 miles southeast of San Francisco. It is also in close proximity to several national parks, including Yosemite (60 miles north), Kings Canyon (60 miles east), and Sequoia (75 miles southeast).
Notably, Fresno is the third-largest majority-Hispanic city in the United States, with 50.5% of its population identifying as Hispanic in 2020.
