The 149th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is nearly upon us! Officially starting on Saturday, February 8th, the show will also run on February 10th–11th, 2025. Returning to the iconic Madison Square Garden in New York City, this is a show neither you or your dog will want to miss.

Nearly 2,500 champion breed dogs will be competing in this show this year in agility and breed competitions, group judging and of course, the Best in Show.

Below we've rounded up everything you need to know about one of the biggest events of the year.

Every year, thousands of dogs and their owners come together to compete for a Westminster title. The competition is officially known as Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show and is the second-longest, continuously held sporting event in the US, second only to the Kentucky Derby.

Since 1948, it’s also been the longest nationally televised live dog show. There are now over 200 breed competitions in addition to seven different group competitions. These include the Masters Agility Championship, Flyball Tournament and a human agility course among others.

This event will start on February 8th, 2025 with doors opening bright and early at 7am. This day will include the Demonstration Ring, Master's Agility Championship, Flyball Tournament, and Human Agility course.

February 10-11, will hold breed and group judging, as well as the Junior Showmanship competitions. The final round on February 11th will reveal the Best in Show.

How does the Westminster Dog Show work?

Each dog will compete against others in its designated group, earning points for each dog it defeats. The more dogs in the event, the higher the points awarded to the winner.

Dogs will be evaluated based on a detailed standard which outlines the ideal characteristics in various areas such as height, weight, coat type, colors, eye shape and color, ear shape, feet, tail and more. The top 210 dogs, recognized as Best of Breed, will advance to the Best in Group competitions. From there, the top dogs will compete for the prestigious Best in Show title.
