Renowned British actor Michael Caine, a highly esteemed figure in Hollywood with a career spanning several decades and marked by numerous accolades, has officially declared his retirement from acting at the age of 90.
Caine's decision to step away from the industry comes after his final film, "The Great Escaper," received widespread acclaim upon its release on October 6th. In this film, he portrays the real-life World War II British veteran Bernie Jordan, who escaped from a care home for the elderly to attend the D-Day celebrations in France in 2014.
During an interview with BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Caine expressed his intention to retire, stating, "I have been saying that I will retire, and now I am actually doing it. At my age, the only roles I am likely to be offered are those of 90-year-old men, or perhaps 85-year-olds."
He further explained, "These roles will not be leading parts. Leading roles are reserved for young, attractive individuals. Therefore, I have decided to retire while I am still held in high regard."
Caine, known for his amiable Cockney persona and deadpan acting style, has an extensive filmography, having appeared in over 160 films throughout his illustrious seven-decade career. His distinctive and often imitated voice has contributed to his iconic status in both Hollywood and Britain, where he became a prominent figure during the vibrant "Swinging Sixties" era.
His film repertoire includes timeless classics such as "Zulu" and "The Italian Job," as well as more recent appearances in films like "Interstellar" and "The Dark Knight" franchise, alongside Christian Bale.
Having been nominated for an Academy Award six times, Caine has emerged victorious on two occasions, winning in 1986 for his role in "Hannah and Her Sisters" and in 2000 for "The Cider House Rules." He has also received Golden Globe Awards, BAFTAs, and numerous other prestigious honors throughout his career. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.
Caine's retirement from acting comes just a month before the scheduled release of his debut novel, "Deadly Game." In June, he revealed that writing a thriller had been a long-standing aspiration, as it is the genre he most enjoys reading.
