Echoes of the City

Memory, past, and living heritage

By Wathsala RathnayakaPublished 3 months ago 1 min read
Queen’s Hotel, Kandy – where history meets the present.

When we hear the word “Heritage,” the first thing that often jumps into our mind is old buildings, structures, status, and monuments. But the city holds a diverse collection of memories and is in its hands and traditions.

In every crowded city and street, there are built stories through crafts, festivals, and traditional practices. From artisans creating crafts to the community keeping a unique tradition alive, shaping a city's character. Therefore, a city is not a brick and stone; but it is the story we write, music we play, crafts we build, and celebrations we share.

The skyscraping developments have threatened to override the heritage. What in next? Protection of heritage is widely spoken but is it enough? preservation of heritage is all about support. To create spaces compatible with development, conserving the cultural value and the traditions aren’t lost, and memories need to continue passing from generation to generation.

Yet, heritage is a breathing culture. By experiencing cities are not just places but places we live in.
