EZ-Q Universe, the renowned recording hip hop artist, rapper, and producer, encapsulates a multifaceted journey bridging continents and cultures. Born in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, his lineage is deeply rooted in legacy as the son of a late Nigerian legislator. At the tender age of 3, he embarked on a transformative journey, relocating to the Bronx, New York, via London, UK, an experience that cultivated his global cosmopolitan mindset while retaining a distinct New York State of mind.
His magnetic pull towards music ignited at a remarkably young age of 3, marked by stellar performances in elementary school plays. In his formative years, EZ-Q Universe made a ritual of rushing home after school to immerse himself in the captivating world of music through shows like Video Music Box on UHF Channel 31, hosted by DJ Ralph McDaniels. Inspired by luminaries such as The Guru, Nice & Smooth, Lord Finesse, Showbiz & AG, and Nasir Jones’s debut performance in “Live at The Barbeque,” he was propelled towards the path of becoming a rapper.
At 14, he penned his inaugural rhyme and delved into rap battles with the group BMW (Black Miracle Workers). However, due to escalating circumstances prompting concerns for his safety, he departed New York abruptly. Despite this pivotal change, his unwavering commitment to a New York State of mind endured.
Transitioning back to Nigeria, EZ-Q commenced ghostwriting and local performances in Port Harcourt, marking the onset of his artistic journey. From ghostwriting for artists in the US, UK, and Nigeria, he propelled himself to unveil his independent debut project, “Soul Volution,” in 2018, amassing over 1 million streams organically within the next five years.
His musical repertoire burgeoned with two albums, “Funkalogic” and “Souled Out,” in 2021, alongside over a hundred singles released in 2023 alone. Garnering 2.2 million streams on Spotify in 2023, EZ-Q found his tracks playlisted on various independent curator platforms.
Channeling a positive lyrical style reminiscent of Native Collective’s ethos and embracing influences akin to De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, and Digable Planets, his flow mirrors the essence of Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, and The Guru.
Not confined solely to the role of a rapper, EZ-Q is an accomplished producer and an entertainment lawyer, currently residing in Essex, UK. He maintains strong ties to New York, shuttling back and forth, embodying a lifestyle infused with diverse urban cultures worldwide.
His recent single, “LA URBANA,” a fusion of jazz, soul, and hip hop, epitomizes his globe-trotting odyssey, articulating his multifaceted experiences traversing urban landscapes worldwide.
