Crochet for Absolute Beginners
How to Crochet for Absolute Beginners
Today, I'm going to teach you how to crochet for absolute beginners. I'll walk you through some basic stitches and skills you'll need to know, so let's get started!
Today, we'll cover how to make a slip knot, hold your crochet hook, crochet a chain, crochet a single crochet, and weave in the ends of your work. For this, you'll need yarn—any basic yarn you have at home will work, or you can pick up some 100% acrylic yarn from the store. For the crochet hook, I recommend aluminum hooks; I have a set of four with different sizes that can be used for various projects. Today, I'll be using a 5.5 mm crochet hook.
To start, make a slip knot. Hold the yarn in your hand with your index finger pointing down. Twist it upwards and put your thumb through the loop. Grab the tail with your thumb and index finger, pull it through to create a loop, then put your crochet hook in and pull the yarn to tighten it.
Next, let's discuss how to hold your crochet hook and yarn. Hold the crochet hook with your thumb and fingers on the indent, similar to holding a knife. With your left hand, hold the yarn in a way that feels comfortable—one method is to hold it through your fingers as if pointing, wrap it around your pointer finger, and use your middle finger and thumb to manage the yarn.
Now, let's learn how to chain. Hold the crochet hook, twist it away from you, and place it on the left side of the yarn. Turn the hook to face you, then towards your left hand, and pull through the loop on the hook. Repeat this process to create a chain of 11 stitches.
Each chain stitch forms a V shape with a top and bottom loop. To crochet a single crochet, insert your hook into the second chain from the hook. Yarn over by going behind the yarn, come out through the stitch, yarn over again, and pull through both loops on the hook. Continue this process across the chain, making 10 single crochets in total.
To continue with another row, chain one, flip your work, and work into each V of the previous row. Insert your hook, yarn over, and pull through both loops. Repeat until you've completed 12 rows for a small square swatch.
If you make a mistake, just pull the yarn back to the error, reinsert your hook, and redo the stitches. Once finished, chain one, cut the yarn, pull tight, and weave in the ends with a sewing needle if desired.
Now that you've learned the basics of crocheting, you can explore countless projects using just these two stitches. Remember, practice makes perfect—don't get discouraged if it seems tricky at first. Keep practicing, and it will become easier over time.
