Olympics presenter Clare Balding has drawn a sharp contrast between the reactions of England players to their runners-up medals after the Euro 2024 final and Team GB star Adam Peaty's response to winning silver in Paris.

Peaty, a three-time Olympic champion, finished as runner-up in the 100m breaststroke final on Sunday evening, narrowly missing out on gold by just 0.002 seconds to Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi. Despite his slightly slower time compared to his semi-final run, Peaty was gracious and emotional in his acceptance of the silver medal. He shared the podium with the United States' Nic Fink, as both swimmers finished with the exact same time.

In an emotional interview with BBC Sport, Peaty expressed his happiness at winning silver, reflecting on the physical and mental challenges he had overcome in the past year just to compete at the Games. Both he and Fink showed pride in their silver medals, a sentiment Balding found noteworthy.

Balding contrasted this with the reaction of some England players following their 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. She said, "I love this because, honestly, after the finals of the Euros when they all take their medals off, I just thought, 'You got to the final and performed really well. Don't say this means nothing.' And I love the fact that Adam and Nic Fink there are clearly incredibly proud of those silver medals and will hold them up and say, 'Yes, I won this.'"

In recent years, it has become common for football players to remove their runners-up medals immediately after receiving them, signaling that a second-place finish isn't satisfactory. While not all England players removed their medals after the Euro 2024 final, the actions of those who did sparked criticism from fans on social media.

Team GB has won two silver medals so far at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Cyclist Anna Henderson secured silver in the women's time trial, finishing behind Australia's Grace Brown. Henderson, who has endured two broken collarbones in the past year, was overwhelmed with joy upon learning of her achievement, bursting into tears of delight.

Balding's comments highlight the differing attitudes toward winning silver medals and suggest a call for greater appreciation of the achievements that come with reaching the finals of major competitions.
