Still Life with Flowers Ambrosius Bosschaert

Dutch still-life artist Ambrosius Bosschaert was known for his love of painting floral bouquets. In this artwork he as depicted flowers in a vase true to life with vibrant colors. The vase itself is a thing of beauty with decorative lionheads. On the table by the vase is a butterfly.

Dutch Golden Age artist Rachel Ruysch ws the most well-known femal artist of her time. She invented her own style and had a 60-year career painting botanical imagery. Each flower petal is detailed and done in rich colors. To add to the scene is a cricket.

Flowers in a Glass Vase John Constable

English Romantic artist John Constable was known for his landscape paintings. He also enjoyed creating still-life paintings. This artwork was painted in oil on a millboard. The dark, muted color palette is balanced by pops of red and yellow on the flowers, with Constable creating drama through the contrast of light and dark.Some of the leaves from the stems have curled up and fallen below the vase.

Hibiscus Hiroshige

Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hiroshige created ornate floral arrangements. This creation of hibiscus flowers was among his best as the bold orange coloe draws attention. In Japanese hibiscus means gentle and these flowers were given as a social custom to greet visitors.

Bouquet of Flowers Edouard Manet

French modernist artist Edouard Manet loved flowers and only painted bouquets in vases with flowers scattered loosely on tables. His brushwork made him a pivotal figure between Realism and Impressionism. During the last six months of his life he only painted floral still-life. Also in this artwork you can see interesting reflections in the glass vase.

Roses and Lillies Henri Fantin-Latour

French artist Henri Fantin-Latour specialized in flower painting. He created Realist paintings. In this artwork the artist uses the long stems of the lilies to cut across the canvas, balancing the small pink and white rose bouquet resting on the table. The blush pink hues of the rose petals played up the romanticism of this painting providing a soft contrast to the deep brown of the wooden table.

Still Life with Irises Vincent Van Gogh

Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh painted many famous flower paintings among them his famed Sunflower series. This still-life was painted while the artist was still a patient at a psychiatric hospital in Saint Remy. There are two versions to this painting one against a pink background and one against a yellow background. The yellow background made the vase stand out more.

Bouquet of Roses Pierre-Auguste Renoir

French artist Pierre=Auguste Renoir was the leading artist during the Impressionist movement. Here he has painted lush, plump rosebuds in hues of red and pink. Some flowers have fallen to the table.

Flower Garden Gustav Klimt

Austrian Symbolist artist Gustav Klimt painted wonderful landscapes during his summers in Litzlberg, a small village in Austria. Here he has created a charming garden full of flowers and natural beauty.

Water Lilies Claude Monet

French artist Claude Money was best known for his water lily paintings. This is a series of Impressionist artwork. Money painted more than 250 pieces for this series over the last 30 years of his life.

Amaryllis Piet Mondrian

Dutch artist Piet Mondrian created this early still-life in a Fauvist style. There are bold blocks of color and this watercolor nicely balances the colors and light of the amaryllis. It appears as if the flower has sprung up right out of the vase.

White Vase with Flowers Odilon Redon

French Symbolist artist Odilon Redons was prominent in still-lifes. His flowers were abstract and full of color.His flowers appear to have just been arranged in the vase in vibrant colors.

Red Canna Georgia O'Keeffe

American Modernist artist Georgia O'Keefe created many paintings in her Red Canna series, featuring the Canna lily plant. It features the vibrant red and orange bloom set against a green and blue background. The juxtaposition makes the flower light up within the composition.
