Art is simple ,it’s not complex. It’s a mark on a page, and another brush stroke. A touch of color in the right spots… a reworked piece of art that continues until the artist sees what they are satisfied with. A finish product. I have never been confident with portraits. However, lately I have been fascinated by them. There are artists that can make it seem so realistic like a photo of someone that is actually a drawing. Do mine look this way? No, I have a more abstract style by nature and I’m okay with that. At the end of the day Art is expression, it is what we make it.
I remember in high school wanting to take the painting classes that were offered. The classes were always disappointingly filled every time. I did however get into a drawing class. I never felt confident when trying to create a self portrait. Was the nose just right? We’re the shadows right? I always used my eraser so much. Now I sketch ever so lightly so I can overlap a mistake. This is one way I know that I have grown ever so slightly as an artist. Perception changes based on the viewer. When I decided to create my daughter’s self portrait I was filled with enthusiasm because of my love and adoration as a mother for her. Creating something out of a place of love and admiration is a great start. What is your intention when you create a work of art? Where is your heart and mind during the creative process. That’s what it is, remember…? It’s a process by nature and it takes time. Sketch, adjust, add color, overlap, change colors, highlight, shadows, details… rework, set it down, pick it up add paint and marker, add fine liner for details. This is a little bit about how much process went. When I wasn’t satisfied with the color of something I went over it with another color or hue. I then took a breath and realized Art can be adjusted. Yes it was like I had an epiphany during the creation process. I always taught my art students this and now I was experiencing it firsthand. I’m starting to love creating portraits. After all, remember those characature artists at amusement parks that sit and do a really cool funky abstract drawing and everyone loves it? I decided that might be me. Never be afraid to try a new style or a new kind of artwork- watercolor, abstract, portrait, mixed media…
It is when you find your sweet spot that you will find that sigh of relief. Like ohhhh it’s ok to make a mistake and actually this is something I am enjoying creating. One must really love the process. The additions and substations and the changes we make to our art define the final result. We dare not be afraid to continue to work through it to get to it. So get to it. Todays the day for you to shine. Colors, lines, blurry or clear. Try it and you might find satisfaction in your final result of something new. Style is style, we all differ and uniquely contribute to the vary of prices in this ever so diverse world we live in. We are like a giant puzzle with every piece waiting to be placed.
