Emilia Perez

After several delays, the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were finally revealed on January 23.

Leading the pack is Emilia Pérez, which made history as the first non-English language film to receive 13 nominations. It is up for Best Picture alongside Wicked, which secured 10 nominations, including nods for Cynthia Erivo as Best Actress and Ariana Grande as Best Supporting Actress. Other top contenders include The Brutalist with 10 nominations, while Conclave and A Complete Unknown each earned eight.

This year marks a rare occasion with two musicals, Emilia Pérez and Wicked, competing for Best Picture. The last time this happened was in 1968 with Oliver! and Funny Girl in the category.

Record-Breaking Nominations

Karla Sofía Gascón, who stars in Emilia Pérez, became the first openly transgender actor to be nominated for an Oscar. Expressing gratitude, Gascón shared on Instagram:

"Thank you so much @theacademy @emiliaperezfilm."

Ariana Grande, nominated for her role in Wicked, also celebrated her recognition.

"Picking my head up in between sobs to say thank you so much to @theacademy for this unfathomable recognition," she wrote, sharing a heartfelt Instagram post featuring childhood photos and a video of her singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Grande added, "I cannot stop crying, to no one’s surprise. I’m humbled and deeply honored to be in such brilliant company and sharing this with tiny Ari who sat and studied Judy Garland singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow... Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for this acknowledgment @theacademy."

Notable Trends in Nominations

This year’s acting categories feature 13 first-time nominees, including Gascón and Grande. Colman Domingo, who is up for Best Actor for Sing Sing, is the only performer returning from last year, where he was also nominated in the same category for Rustin.

Announcement Delays and Ceremony Details

The nomination announcements were postponed twice due to the Los Angeles wildfires. Originally scheduled for January 17, they were rescheduled to January 19 and then delayed again to January 23. The nominees were announced by Wicked star Bowen Yang and Saturday Night Live cast member Rachel Sennott.

The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will take place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The event will air live on March 2 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC and will also be available for streaming on Hulu.
