It's that time of year when gym sales go through the roof and candy sales plummet for at least a week or so before the inevitable - Oh well… I'll try again next year.

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to reflect on past goals and set new ones for the road ahead and setting writing goals is no different.

While I may be a year or so off from being 30, (I'm 27) now is still a good time to sit down and decide what I hope to accomplish before hitting the next milestone in my life.

I am writing this for you all to see because sharing goals with others helps keep the goal-maker accountable and puts thoughts and actions behind what might normally be a bunch of pretty words thinking about what could happen instead of how you're going to make it happen.

The Failure of Resolutions

While setting goals for the new year is common unfortunately breaking them is just as common.

But why? Why do so many who make these plans reach the end of the year having accomplished none of them?

Simple - It comes down to planning.

I can set Run a Marathon as my goal for 2024 - and I would fail miserably. Not only because I am horrible at running, but I would be setting a goal without the means to complete it.

Can I even run a 5K? No… but that's not the point.

There's nothing wrong with me setting the overall goal of running a marathon in 2024 - as long as I make a plan on how to achieve it. i.e. go to the gym and do cardio, look for running groups in my area at my current skill level, etc.

Whatever goals you want to accomplish in the new year instead of placing them as individual bullet points in a list give them five to ten lines beneath each goal and fill in the steps on what you need to accomplish to make sure you can achieve it.

This advice goes hand in hand with any writing goals you and I hope to accomplish in 2024.

Become a Bestseller is a wonderful goal to shoot for as long as you make a plan on how to achieve it. Writing, editing, and marketing goals all need to be met before the overarching goal can even be dreamed about.

My Goals

What do I want to achieve in 2024?

For my largest goal, I have decided to trade in my self-publishing hat and attempt to replace it with a new one.

Find an Agent-  is #1 currently on my list with the plan to continue submitting my manuscripts to at least one agent daily.

Complete All Unfinished Works - Unfortunately, my brain and I have some commitment issues. While I am writing one story I will have an idea for another story that must be written right then and there or else it will never be written. So I abandon my current project, jump feet first into a new one, and let the old one drift to the bottom of a pile to be worked on at a later date.

I currently have eight such stories. To complete this I will work through each story, one at a time, until it is complete. Only then can I move on to the next or start any other stories that pop out of my head.

Sure I'll still place those ideas in a document, give myself maybe an hour tops to write down anything I am thinking about it, and then let it lie until it's time to revisit it.

Reach 5K Followers on all Social Platforms - My social media presence is severely neglected across all platforms and in the new year, I hope to give them the attention they deserve to begin growing with consistent posting and engagement.

I am calling 2024 the Year of Completion for me as I hope to leave no project unfinished by the time the clock ticks midnight and leads us into 2025.

Do I have more goals than this? Yes, but I won't bore you with how I plan to run that marathon or buy a home as the list of how these goals will be accomplished is longer than I'd like to add and this is a place to speak about writing.

Whatever goals you hope to accomplish this year I wish you the best of luck - though you won't need it because you have a plan.

With love,

B.K. xoxo

This made me think of what Tim Minchin said about not fixing your eyes too strongly on the end goal, or you miss out on the shiny thing in your peripheral. He's right! It's all about the side quests 😁 You never know where they will end up leading 😁
