Writing Changed My Life — Here’s How
My Personal Story With Writing
✍️ Writing
Writing has always been a powerful tool for people to make their thoughts known — from ancient Neolithic cave paintings to TikTok captions today. But what is writing, really? And how can you use it to share your ideas in a way that feels true to you?
📝 What Writing Really Is
Really, writing isn’t as complex or intimidating as people think. At its core, it’s just putting your thoughts into a language that others can understand.
As one of my English teachers, Mr. Matt Philips, once explained to me, people don’t think in any particular language.
People have internal dialogues with themselves all the time, but the words used in these self-conversations are not defined in any kind of language. In fact, thinking goes beyond any single language — it exists in all languages and none at the same time, depending on how you look at it.
But since no one else shares your exact way of thinking, you have to translate those thoughts into words to help them understand. That’s what writing does.
👦 What Writing Means to Me
For me, writing not only represents a form of useful communication but also a window for me to express myself. The incredible possibilities of writing were first opened up to me by my seventh-grade English teacher, Mr. Matthew Alessi-Friedlander (Mr. A for short). Through his own passion for writing, Mr. A made me see writing as a tool I could harness for my interests instead of a burden I had to contend with every time I took up a pen.
Over the years, writing has become an important way for me to express myself. I started my own diary, and in that diary, I recorded some of my ideas on current events or simply jotted down my emotions, sometimes things that I wouldn’t have said out loud. Writing became a kind of comfort — I didn’t have to worry about anyone reading it unless I wanted them to.
As I wrote, I began to feel more and more empowered by my writing, and I eventually found that writing also stimulates my thinking on a deeper level. When I write, I am organizing my thoughts into clear sentences, which helps me untangle the mess in my mind and see things more clearly.
Besides that, writing also requires me to think more deeply about the topic I am writing about and, at the same time, creates a calm space of reflection for me to do exactly that. Thus, when writing, I can better engage my mind to analyze my situation, which is beneficial for figuring out things.
All in all, writing is such an amazing skill, and I truly believe that everyone should learn to appreciate it. So, this is why I am writing this blog: to help you understand what writing is and how you can excel at it.
📖 Why Reading Matters When It Comes to Writing
Personally, I have found several exercises to be really helpful in promoting my writing skills. First among them is reading.
Everyone, even big writers like J. K. Rowling and Khaled Hosseini, starts off with no clue about how to write — they weren’t born writing GOATS after all.
One way to get better is to read what other people have written. From that, you can learn how they shape ideas and use words, and apply it to ur own writing. As you read more and more literary works, writing will become easier for you.
✏️ Making Writing Part of Your Life
From my experience, another way to enhance your writing is simply to write.
However, the key here is to write often and to write about what you really care about. Just think about it: how much progress would you make if you wrote once every month compared to if you wrote once every day?
Ideally, you want to write every day — even just a little — to build your skills and confidence over time.
You don’t have to make your diary perfect because there is no one to judge your writing. Just spend a quarter of an hour each night to write entries in your diary. Sit down at your computer, take a deep breath to calm yourself down, and just let the writing flow.
Write about what happened today, what made you feel happy and what made you feel upset, what you are planning to do tomorrow. Really, anything is ok.
At first, writing personal things might feel awkward, but the more you do it, the more your diary will feel like a trusted friend. You can tell all sorts of things to your diary, and it won’t criticize you. Your diary will always be there if you want to “talk” to it, and that’s what I love about it.
❤️🔥 Always Follow Your Passion
Moreover, there is no point in halfheartedly writing about bland and uninteresting topics because your spirit is not really into it. Thus, subconsciously, you won’t feel as motivated to think deeply or write clearly.
But when you’re passionate about a topic, your brain — and your heart — fully show up. If you really care about something, writing about that thing will become easy and even enjoyable for you because both your brain and your heart are dedicated to it.
One great example of that was an article that I worked on last year, called “Unmasking the Atrocities of the Japanese Taiji Dolphin Hunts,” which was inspired by a documentary called “The Cove.”
Instead of experiencing the dogged, stretched-out writing process that some people encounter, writing about the Taiji dolphin hunts in Japan gave me real pleasure. I really sympathized with the dolphins being hunted there, and so, I was extremely motivated to find out all I could about their situation.
So the next time something grabs your attention, don’t just say, “That’s interesting,” and move on. Use that energy and write about it!
📢 To Everyone
Writing is one of the greatest gifts ever given to humanity. When the printing press was invented, it helped spread ideas and knowledge so widely that it sparked a new era of thinking that ended the Middle Ages and launched the Renaissance.
That’s the power of writing. It can spark revolutions, shift perspectives, and change lives — including mine. Writing has helped me understand myself better, connect with others, and see the world more clearly. For that, I’m truly grateful.
So if you’re thinking about writing, don’t let fear or doubt stop you. Just start. You don’t need to be perfect — you just need to be honest and open. Your voice matters.
And to all the amazing writers out there: keep changing the world with your words.
